I tried that. But only a slight change in instrument volume rendered the voice impossible to comprehend for me. I tried a couple of vocal boost tricks, but they are worthless after a vocoder.

Vocoder. If you use the multitrack program REAPER, it's one of the builtin effects. But it is a bit of a bear to get configured correctly.
