Musical Inspiration:
Charlotte's Web - Chin Up (while writing this, and honestly, the inspiration for Charlotte’s naming)
Elizabeth Mitchell - Little Bird, Little Bird (for reading the story and during the drawing)
Decided last night’s vent needed a happy ending, especially since I have some great people that helped me feel a lot better.

-I heard crying over this way.-
Ress followed the Liepard’s swift trot towards the origin of the noise, noting that Diana had been an apt name for her. She had a nose for hunting (sometimes prey, sometimes treasure, often trouble). And the tigress turned persian wondered what exactly her partner had turned up.
The fair sized Deino behind Ress rolled his eyes hidden under the feathered ruff that covered his head and let out a low grumble, but followed. She was a fine huntress, yes. But after the last three or four times being less than pleasant affairs, Ancalagon did not fancy the idea of wandering into something possibly dangerous at night.
As the group approached, the crying grew marginally louder and started to sharpen from an amorphous, unhappy sound to a hiccuping sob, much like a crying child.
-It’s back here!-
Diana gave a few sniffs, then carefully plodded forward a few tiny steps.
Ress stepped up behind the Liepard to get a better look at the sobbing entity.
It didn’t smell human… and upon a true and honest glance, Ress found that it wasn’t. It was a little grey thing, about the size of a small child. A snap of the fingers opened the storage portal she kept on hand and a bit of fishing produced the pokedex, which she proceeded to point towards the creature. Slowly.
“Banette,” the electronic voice announced through the speakers. “The Marionette Pokemon. A doll that became a Pokémon over its grudge of being thrown away. It seeks the child who disowned it.”
Ress tilted her head and studied the screen, wincing at how bright it was. A ghost type.
And yet this little thing didn’t look much like it wanted to hold a grudge over anything. It was about as intimidating as a crying child. And sounded about the same.
“Um… excuse me,” Ress ventured softly.
The Banette’s head snapped up from between its knees and a pair of sharp, fearful red eyes cut the darkness. The zipper on its mouth didn’t move, and yet the voice seemed to cut the air around them.
“W-who are you?” it asked. “You’re not my owner! Go away!”
Ress remained wisely quiet for a moment, considering her options.
“We don’t mean you any harm,” she said softly.
“I SAID GO AWAY!”
The screech that followed was gratingly harsh and loud enough, ironically, to wake the dead, and made nearly everyone back away from the noise.
“Ow, ow, ow, ow, ow,” Ress whined, removing her hands from her ears and sticking her fingers in to make sure they weren’t bleeding. They were certainly ringing enough.
“That worked fantastically,” Diana muttered. “Now what?”
Ancalagon, on the other hand, had no intention of taking this insult lying down. He charged the doll-like ghost, who shrieked in abject terror and scrambled to get out of the way. It’s frantic run for cover just dodged the incoming headbutt, leaving the deino to run full tilt into the side of the brick building. He let out a groaning, petulant whine of pain and shook his head.
-Stupid ghost- he hissed at the terrified Banette. -I snap you good.-
-Ankh, behave!- Ress snapped at him. -You’re scaring it.-
The dragon lifted his head and sniffed. -But… but leader-female…-
The cat drew herself to her full height, despite knowing he wouldn’t be able to see it.
-No buts! Now get over here.-
Ancalagon let out a sulky huff and trotted toward the scent of his leading partner. He did allow himself a snap at Diana when she snickered at him though. That at least made things a little better.
Ress approached the little Banette carefully, letting out a sigh when the doll curled up in a tight ball and whimpered. She put a hand on the creature’s shoulder.
“I’m sorry about Ankh. He’s really not so bad…Now what’s wrong?”
“My person left me all alone,” the doll said at last. “I waited and waited for her to come back, but she never did.”
The Banette sniffled, looking as though it were about to burst into tears again.
“I thought I was a good dolly,” it said. As Ress listened, she could have sworn the doll’s voice growing higher pitched, like a little girl. “I did all the right things. I listened to everything she had to say. I was always ready to play.. I didn’t mind being squeezed and hugged when she slept with me.. I even stayed by her when she was sad..”
The tiger’s thoughts went back to toys long since loved and played with sitting in their hollowed places on shelves and arranged lovingly back home, and how she had fought to keep some of them from being thrown out as a child. And now the most fragile ones had their own shelf…
“I don’t understand,” the doll said. “What did I do wrong? Didn’t she love me?”
Ress didn’t say anything for a good long moment. What could you say to someone who was abandoned like that? Instead, she picked the Banette up and hugged her tightly.
“I don’t know,” she replied. “But you can come with me if you want. I can promise you lots of hugs.. and these two knuckleheads will warm up to you eventually.
The doll looked over at Diana who was washing herself and trying not to look interested, and Ancalagon who was doing his best to ignore the situation completely.
"You mean… I can come with you?” she asked.
“Sure can!” Ress answered with a gentle smile. “You can be part of our little family.”
Those little red eyes brightened up at once.
“Okay!”
“It’s all settled then!” The tiger turned to her other partners. -Let’s skip this pop stand. We’ve got what we need.-
Diana lifted her head and rotated her ears in query. -Her too?-
The cat nodded. -Her too.-
-Does she have t- OW!-
The liepard cut off the deino mid-complaint with a swipe of her claws.
-Just shut up and march, Ankhy.-
The four moved out of the alleyway and, with a bit of walking, out of the city limits. Ress opted to carry their new partner for a bit, figuring the little one could use a bit of affection. She cut an eye back to check on her new friend. The Banette relaxed into her grip, happy.
“You got a name, kiddo?” Ress asked after a while. The head that had been draped across her neck and shoulder lifted.
“I- I don’t know anymore… I’ve been alone so long that I forgot the name my person gave me.”
“Well, we’ll just have to give you a new one.” Ress said in a decisive tone. “How about Charlotte?”
There was a pause.
“Oooh, I like that,” the doll replied. “I like that a lot.”
“Then you’re Charlotte now.” Ress said. “Welcome to the family.”
