It was about a week or two after the Battle of the Aces… I will never forget that moment when me and the famous, “Red Dawn” went toe to toe in the skies over Odessa. At the last moment of our dogfight, it was a draw in our view, but to those that watched us fight in the skies, it was me who won by default. I didn’t feel like I won that fight, but it didn’t matter right now. After the declaration of our contract to the “Aerodynamic Arms of Defense Company” and the winning ceremony, we had our own respite back at November base. My squad are either hanging the pub/bar, at their barracks, or somewhere else nearby the base, procrastinating, probably. Me on the other hand, lay back and relax on my nice warm F-22 gazing at the midday sun, slowly crawling to the far horizon to set in the west. I then think back to my mentor, my rival, my friend, as he let me carry on his legacy as the next World Ace and then calls me, “Dawning Phoenix”... I will never forget that moment. Both our dogfight, and my christening from the greatest Ace of the old Battle of the Aces.
“Carter!” I hear a voice below me breaking the calm air and the soothing breeze blowing from the north, and the roaring thunder of a jet flying across the sky, leaving a straight white contrails behind, few feet away from the blazing sun. I then look down below my plane. It was my older brother, Leon! I then reply to him, “Hey! What are you doing here?” I sat up crossing my left leg w/ a gentle smile on my muzzle. He chuckles, “I was looking for my little champion of the skies and see what he was up to.” He then walks up to my craft and extends a hand to me, “Can I join?” I extend a hand to grab his hand and pull him up w/ effort. He could’ve grabbed the ladder, but what the hell? A good sibling contact seems fine for me as I grunt w/ effort to pull his scaly ass up to my craft as he grab hold on the edge of the plane w/ a free hand and lifted his right leg to the wing to lift himself up. He then turn around and sat on the edge of my 22 beside me as we both watched the sun slowly wheel across the sky.
“Leon?” I ask him as my calm smile slowly vanished temporarily.
“Hm?” He glanced at me, wondering what was my question.
I wonder what to say to him or ask him after a brief silence of staring at the sky, but I lost it. I then ask him a different question, one he already thinks he knows what to answer, “I wonder what Red Dawn is doing right now?”
“Probably preparing for his future as a civilian.” he replies already knowing that I was gonna ask him something but forgot what I wanted to ask Leon. He then sighs and says, “I know you were going to ask me something Carter, but let’s just relax. There’s going to be long days ahead of us. I wouldn’t worry about him right now, brother, let him do what he does, and you do what you do. Be the best ace of the skies, be the World Ace you always wanted to be!” he’s right, there’s no need to worry. I just went through a greatest event of my life, fought and met, my greatest hero that made me carry on the legacy of the skies as a new ace, and I need to pass this torch to the next newborn ace in the next Battle of the Aces, if he is deemed worthy for it.
It was almost an hour or two of resting on the side of my plane and I’m surprised we never got scale burned! Leon slowly wakes up before me and sits straight and stretches and groans. He then jumps off my plane and lands on his feet and gains his pose standing straight and calls out to me, “Hey, Carter, let’s go home.” I slowly came to my senses as well and yawned. I then followed suit and followed behind as he walked ahead of me. I will never forget those days. I will also continue on my own path as he continues his. However, a few days later, just a year earlier when the Siberians declared war against Russia and the southern countries, Red Dawn, and a small portion of the population of the world had went missing. And I fear for the worse of what might happen to him and pray to god that he’s okay...
