Part II
I spent the three days at the old witches house, and when time came to return we had already bonded. She now seemed more like a grandmother to me, then an old hag. I returned using the pumpkin from before, which was now starting to age. No difference on getting me to the destination I sought. In the pumpkin patch I found myself blindly reaching for my head. The pumpkins power dissipated once I came to where I wanted, and now I can only see inside the pouch.
My hand began to reach for it, but I felt a sudden jerk and soon my head was swinging in another's hands.
In the voice I recognized a taunt, “Seems you've lost your head, Robert.”
With my head still in the sack I replied, “Witley! Let go of me this instant!”
“Such anger, dear friend, Its not good for your image.”
My body turned swiftly to find which direction he was coming from, but without my sight I could not see him.
“I told you, after Thanksgiving, I would return.” He reminded.
“What do you want?” I replied with a sneer.
“I suppose you have not heard of the treasure of the horseman.”
“He doesn't have any riches!”
He shook the bag and my head bounced uncomfortably. He snapped, “It's there! He protects it! I want it!”
I felt him push my shoulder knocking me down.
Before anything else happened I heard a familiar female voice, “You're picking on the weak I see, Judge.”
He paused and dropped my head on my chest. I heard him walk away as Emma's hands pulled me out of my pouch.
“Emma!” I exclaimed as I looked into her face.
She replied, “Robert! You have gotten yourself into much trouble.”
“Grandfather?” I asked
“No! The judge. Grandfather is easy to agitate, but he is more forgiving then those believe he is.”
“But I went to Grandmother's. He wasn't happy about that.” I took my head from her and placed it back.
“No he wasn't,” She responded, “But I went before.”
“You?”
“I was cleansed as I assume you were too.”
I nodded and she helped me up.
“Don't they despise each other though? Grandmother fears for her life.”
Emma cracked a smile, “Grandfather forgave her for what she did, but he just wants his head. Though I don't know what would happen to Sleepy Hollow when Grandfather can rightfully see.”
I was relieved and concerned simultaneously.
“Why are you here?” I asked.
She walks over to a pumpkin and pulls out my coat. It was cleaned.
“Thank you graciously!” I said as I grabbed my coat and put it on, “But now, I must inquire on how you knew I was going to be here at this time?”
She smiled and simply replied, “I have my ways.”
I was happy to have my coat back, and much more ecstatic to be saved. Though my mind rushed around pondering why the judge feared my sibling and not I. There seemed something more to Emma then I knew. In any case this wasn't the time to ask more questions. I needed to return to my business for its opening.
I invited Emma to join me, but she wanted to return, so I left her there.
Upon returning to the bank, John met me outside, “You have returned.”
A pleasant smile came upon my face, “Yes I have.”
“How was your holiday?”
“Something different that is certain.”
John had previously unlocked the door, hence I was caught slightly off guard when I tried to unlock it. John chuckled at this and patted my back. My neck slid forward slightly and I smiled nervously to John and he apologized.
I walk in and straighten my head, while John closed the door behind me.
“The Judge has been looking for you all thanksgiving.”
I nodded, “I uh.....ran into him upon my return.”
John shakes his head, “That man is more corrupt then the devil himself.”
“That's past now.” I comment. John had not seen my incident in the patch, so he had no clue to what I was commenting, but he nodded anyway.
As for the rest of the uneventful day, none arrived at the bank and upon closing time no word was spoken between us. In an awkward manner however, this situation was abnormal, yet no one acknowledged it.
I slipped into my night clothes and did my nightly rituals, but considering my mornings I decided to just remove my head. I placed it upon a pillow on the floor, like a pet, and rested my remains on the bed. It seemed much less painful then waking up to my head dropping to the floor. It was slightly more comfortable, with the exception that my head would remain on its side and not turn about for equality, but that was a minor dissatisfaction compared to colliding to the wooden floor.
