The story behind the Goddess of Magic and the last witch Maggie Sinclair dates all the way back to the late 1600's during the time of the Salem Witch Trials. Wakanda, being the most powerful of the Deities, rarely makes an appearance in the mortal world unless absolutely necessary.
When people where being hunted and accused of being witches or seen performing anything related to the practice, Maggie was among the youngest who were still alive. These innocent people being executed for performing witchcraft were indeed witches. However, they were not demi-gods but simply beings who were born with the ability to wield magic. Magic has existed since the time of the Elder Gods and has been a part of the Earth's very being ever since. It simply just goes unnoticed like breathing in air, but at certain times can find it's way into the soul of a newborn child.
Magic does not do this consciously as it is simply drawn to the powerful force of one's spirit. Those who are gifted with this event only notice this when they reach a certain age, and for Maggie it was at the age of five. She never used her magic for selfish reasons, and would simply change herself from her sixteen-year-old self into her five-year-old self for fun. When the Witch Trials began, her family tried to hide her from the others in her village. This resulted in them being accused of harboring a witch and sentenced to death. In her attempt to save them she herself was captured. From what she learned moments before her scheduled hanging, she was declared the "Last Witch", and when she was no more so too would her kind. With her last ounce of strength she let out a powerful scream that expelled a large concentration of magic within her. The villagers were blown down and the gallows itself was shattered.
This act is what finally brought fourth the attention of the deity to the Trails. In a blinding flash and crack of orange lightning, the Lightning and Magic Goddess made herself known to the village. It may have been the first time in hundreds of years she appeared in the mortal world, but the stories and legends were all the villagers needed to known who it was. They all unworthily bowed in awe as she completely ignored them and made her way to Maggie.
"You are safe now child." Maggie had nothing but tears in her eyes as she was freed from her bonds and embraced the goddess. She merely uttered the words "mom" and "dad" and she broke down. "I'm sorry." Wakanda repaid her embrace and stroked the orphan gently as though she were her mother. Her attention was then turned to the villagers, and in a single wave of her hand, a spell was placed on them to forever see the faces of the innocent lives they had taken within their minds and would not fade until the day they would pass on. A fitting punishment as they would not be able to stomach eating, or sleep soundly until such a day would come.
Her cousin Jacob Hunt, God of Justice, would later keep an eye on all the villagers for a given time who performed any acts relating to the Witch Trails to ensure none would ever come to pass again.
Since witches to not age after they fully awaken their magical power, Wakanda allowed her to live her life in The Citadel, home of the gods. While most deities would eventually live amongst the mortals and bare demi-god children with a partner, Wakanda decided to adopt Maggie as both her student and daughter.
