Looking at this from another angle, Cooper is trying to be friends with the more popular kids, which generally speaking are manipulative assholes (strange how that's always the case, both in school and as adults :/) the assholes aren't just wanting to put down Andy, they're manipulating Cooper to do it for them, knowing full well Andy would freak and capsize the canoe, bringing Cooper down with him.

If I'm reading into this correctly, this should tell us that Cooper is 1) too trusting, 2) wants to be well liked by everyone, 3) is possibly afraid of disappointing people, particularly anyone of status over him
