The Val Salian Regional Field Guide: Yinglet Development
<<< PREV | FIRST | NEXT >>>
Been a while since the last Field Guide page! As usual, the info in these is supplemental to the story. They'll give a lot of info about the details of the setting that won't necessarily be discussed by the characters, to give readers a better idea of the world setting, to give more context and meaning to things that occur in the story, and possibly give some observant readers hints about what's really going on with this or that.
However, there won't be anything buried in them that will be necessary to know in order to follow the main story, partially so that readers can skip them on their first readthrough if they don't feel like slowing down their pace to read these, and still be able to follow the story just fine.

Did you know theres a thin cavity filled with fluid around your organs? Apparently biologists didnt know this until recently either! Its existence has only recently been discovered and they think its probably the main vector through cancer might spread in the body.
So were still discovering basic stuff about bodies. :3

Ah more fascinating backstory on Yinglets, and an interesting part of their biology no less. I do so love these little tid-bits you produce. Slowly but surely we are getting a clearer picture of these strange rat-birds and the world in which they inhabit.
The bit of their possible history and their continuing evolution was particularly of interest. It does also bring several questions to mind. If the female's breasts are still functional and producing milk, just what do they do with it? Also given the Yinglet knack for random mutations what of younglets born more akin to the pre-shelltooth type? Do they do well within the Enclave or are they seen as an undesired type? Or what if a female possessed a mutation more akin to some species of snake, like certain boas, where the younglets would be born live without an egg? Surely this would come as a shock to any of the enclave nurses and probably the Matriarch. Though makes me wonder how Vizlet would view these.
Do you think perhaps one day you may do a Field Guide from the perspective of the Yinglets and their observations of the world?

Heyo, I absolutely love this mind of worldbuilding! :D
I do have a question, though. How do the eggs increase in mass/volume once they’re out of the womb? I understand that the yinglett inside isgrowing, but where does the extra material to grow with come from? Are the eggs permeable and in contactwith water/nutrients, like some amphibians’?

Great Leader was clearly favouring quantity over quality with his (her?) genetic program, but why? Was he afraid of the yinglets not keeping up with the other races? Or maybe his goal was to yingletize the world for Reasons.
Heck, maybe there's a conspiracy of smart, long-lived yings waiting in the shadow while they churn out that TF juice (it made more sense in my head OK).

I'm sure Kass will have a few choice words for the researcher on the "coincidental" resemblance to the egg-path cutaway looking a LOT like her...
The aging is pretty much what I feared with the only hope being females choosing for longevity over any other trait. Hopefully Kass' age timer is at square 1 since in Ying years he/she would already be dead or demented...

so wait does this mean Kass got younger when he turned into a yinglet? because the dude was probably like 20 something when he turned into one (i forget his age ) yet he looks like he's on the younger side of the yinglet aging process certainly does not look like his fur is greying and molting and shiz. which hey is good news for him means he's got ummm plenty of time to see how to reverse the weird magic yinglet goop the yinglets can make for some reason.
haha actually yes we umm kinda do if you go on valsia's site he has side stories where in one a yinglet clearly say's the magic yinglet transforming goop was left for them by the previous matriarch which indicates a connection whether they directly make it or not is another thing but hey i would reccomend you go check it out for yourself to see it's not a bad side story either if a bit short.
Really interesting - I have not seen this approach to eggs before, and the effect yinglet eugenics have on their rate and mode of reproduction (and maybe health, albeit with their genetic plasticity they might be able to fix this with more eugenics) is intriguing. You have given me some new ideas...
hmm Might be a part of the story but i'm having difficulties getting past the age thing. Perhaps reading too far into it but thats not a long life span at all to get much of anything done at all.
I guess this is a critique but if this is for story telling purposes then i'll back off. I'm sure it is fine if yinglets are mostly instinct driven and they appear to be not dissimilar to a weasel but to get anything real done like algebra or even calculus or the concept of binary code took stable minds generations with decades of research per generation for humans to achieve.
basically with how long they live its even less hard to take anything they have to offer seriously since they wouldn't survive some of the more harsher and long drawn out experiments.
but perhaps thats the point and again i'm reading too much into it so i just had to say that. fun species i'm out.
