It was a perfect fall night. The world was quiet, aside from an occasional wind that blew through the empty streets of the small town. The crisp air faintly smelled like burning wood from fireplaces in otherwise dark houses. The residents were already far into a deep slumber, unaware of what was happening not far away.
The tallest building in town was a church. It was a sturdy stone structure with beautiful glass windows and intricate details. Tons of time and effort had been placed into the creation of such a magnificent architectural masterpiece. Normally, it was the kind of place off-limits to a demon. To even step inside would be impossible, being a location of holy worship. However, this was not your normal church and it had long lost innocence. The corruption was evident as a demon now stealthily pursued his mission and walked past the pews in the nave. Opening a heavy wood door behind the altar, he proceeded southward down a small, narrow staircase which led into the belly of the building below the North transept. This was a highly restricted area, but a demon was never really good at following directions and rules. Locks were merely intended to keep the honest out, and trouble incarnate stood now in a room that held a very secret treasure.
Without hesitation Ty scooped up the priceless items and placed them into a small bag at his right side. The leather flap was double-needle seam stitched to provide extra strength, yet it seemed to barely be able to contain the amount of valuables now hastily stuffed within. Satisfied, a demon grinned a toothy, devious smile and his forked tongue flickered as if tasting the victory of being reunited with his lost items.
However, the reunion was interrupted by a loud crash and slamming doors. He had been discovered, changing his mission instantly from covert to dynamic. Running back up the stairs he found an angry mob intent on his destruction. Surely his prize was not meant to leave the confines of the church walls. Direct disobedience of this rule would not be tolerated tonight and he seemed destined for an epic battle. One thing, however, remained in a demon's favor.
Spreading his immense wings he took flight. He didn't look to see any of the items being hurled towards him. Instead, he focused on the large glass window at the top of the entrance. Sounds of breaking glass filled the silent night and the vibrations of impact jarred a few of the crystals loose. Shards of window fell everywhere, laying on the ground as evidence of his existence, but that was the last image any of the townspeople saw of a Twilight Demon.
