It didn't take long for Rick to notice that something was up with Kate. The homey little bookworm suddenly became adventurous three nights out of the month, leaving before sundown and not returning until dawn. Normally open with her husband, she became mum about what she did on those three nights, and dodged her husband's curious questions. Sometimes she would come home late with disheveled. Rick never thought for an instant that his wife was cheating, not only due to his faith in her, but the fact that her three nights were always on the full moon.
Werewolves were common in these mountains, so Rick figured things out pretty quickly and prepared accordingly. On the next full moon, when his wife went off for her mysterious hike, Rick followed. He was ready to bargain with the beast his wife would become, prepared to tranquilize her with potions until she was calm enough to see reason, and even brought raw meat to appease her. He didn't bring anything silver, though. He would not hurt his wife, even to protect himself.
He wasn't prepared for what he found, though.
Her eyes were too big and alien for a wolf's. Instead of fur, she was sprouting feathers. Her full lips were drawing into a down-turned beak when Rick found her in a clearing, fleshly blooded from a rabbit she had caught and viciously torn about and swallowed. Rick's fear remained the same, though: Losing his wife. A werewolf could only run so far before the curse-breaking dawn arrived. An owl, though? If he spooked Kate and she flew off, he might never find her again. She could fly for miles, losing herself in the wilderness, alone, vulnerable, and afraid for all but three nights of the month before nature took her.
"K-Kate..."
The fear was strong enough to make Rick say her name in a weak, tearful voice. The alien creature his wife was becoming looked up, her changing arms held up as if already to fly. For a long, fearful moment Rick stared at his wife, tears in his eyes, wanting to plead with her to remember him, yet scared his voice would spook her animal side.
After a long moment, as her wings grew in full and feathers covered even her intimate parts, Kate slowly rose to her taloned feet and approached Rick. Rick hadn't realized he had fallen to his knees until he found himself looking up at the were-owl. They stared at each other, then Kate slowly sank to her knees, folding her wings to her side and nuzzling Rick. Rick embraced her, letting out a shaky sigh of relief.
"It's okay, Kate," he whispered, "I don't know much about were-owls, but I'll learn and take care of ya, just as I've always done. I promise."
Kate closed her eyes and let out a sigh-whistle of content.
