I would normally agree when considering their apparent birth ratio…
However, when I consider their…… um… 'ananomy'… I personally think it safer to think that they're female until proven wrong…
Excuse me, while I go say "thank you" to this bucket…

Ah another wonderful upload as always, my friend! And what an interesting look into Yinglets/Younglets this has been. I assume the sweat detail you added her is supposed to suggest that there are maternal and nurturing instincts at play here, but I think that you left it up to interpretation! IS it maternal instincts? Is it Kass worrying for the child, or worrying that if she helps it people will think she's going native? It's a small detail, but I like it all the same! Your work always impresses and entertains me, Sal!
Is it maternal instincts or common human sympathy/ pity? Personally, I tend to think the latter.
If there are maternal instincts, I'd expect those might kick in later with some continued exposure to this younglet. Makes me wonder if their young imprint on individuals that they're exposed to.

That will be very interesting to see indeed! And I do tend to think that there's human decency at work here, I believe I misworded my comment here upon review. It's that last part in what I wrote that I was musing on; the nervousness and internal wondering of if these are maternal instincts (In which Kass would have to ignore them in principle), or if this was just being decent, but the fear of not knowing making Kass hesitant to do anything at all. I've been watching this struggle build in this well paced and beautifully executed comic. She's in a desperate situation where she's trying to hold on to a former life and deeply afraid of losing herself, so every choice, every action, would at some point come into question.
One could easily just enjoy the humor of this comic and the rest of Val's work without the way it expertly explores the subtleties of various aspects of human life as the best of SF/ fantasy can. His writing is really good. He has a uniquely nuanced way of using TF scenarios for this. I find it quite impressive.
How cute. Clearing it's little lungs of Albumen. Still, I feel this might lead to interesting situations along the way. (I really like the pose and expression of Ambassador Kass in panel 8.) This is also the closest image I've seen of Yinglet eyes. I always thought they were smooth, compound eyes, and the "Pupil" was where the creature's focus of vision was, kind of like the eyes of a Mantis, but now I see their eyes are far more complex.
Well Kassie made a decision to help that Younglet live and I applaud it, and hope no negative repercussions find their way to her. While some would say you never know what horrible thing will come Kassie's decision, I would like to hope something good will come from Kassie's decision. And is it me or does that Younglet seem female to you as well.
totally hypothetical, but if females are so sought after, wouldn't it be prudent to open dud eggs in case there was a female inside? since they tend to be sheltered and protected there wouldn't be any issue to help out duds
although then again if there's a higher chance you'd get a weaker male i guess i could see the decision!

Vizlet's hurt expression in the first frame really got to me. It must be really hard on her to have put as much work as she has into making the enclave more than just another yinglet enclave, and she finally meets her intellectual equal, and Kass just keeps dumping on her because it's not as good as Ivenmoth.
Why do I get he feeling Vizlet may have figured this would happen?
I'll just bet this younglet has some interesting mutations, that it and Kass form a special bond, and that there are some interesting ramifications of all this, both positive and negative...

There's an evolutionary theory that says that humans were able to grow larger brains because our jaw muscles and teeth started to become smaller due to diet, allowing for more skull growth in the cranium.
It'd be ironic if the reason why some of these Yinglette eggs didn't hatch is because they had a slightly larger than average brain and as such their teeth were slightly smaller.

Artist: Yay! Kass showed sympathy to a younglet!
Omni as a Yinglet: Well, well, looks like you did care about its survival, for a moment I thought you didn't have a heart. -he chuckles a bit-

Considering how many humans often save young animals quite often, I have a hard time connecting this to a Yinglet motherly instinct. Kass may be a Yinglet now and has been changing on a mental level as well to a certain extent. I still think he's just reacting the way an empathetic human might if put on the spot like that.
Helping the younglet hatch = obvious foreshadowing was not obvious (to me)
I just love Kass casually walking past it, then quickly hurrying back because he just can't let it go. Although, I would have done something with the sound effects to better express his slow-paced and quick-paced footsteps, but I'm just being nitpicky.
Now, what could come from these actions? Firstly, why did Kass do it in the first place? He was a pretty upstanding guy as a human; perhaps his actions are based of his intincts to help someone in need. He helped Elim when he was wounded. He helps Yannit and Isher integrate under House Ivenmoth. Elim talked so much about Kass can no longer be the one helping others and be the one accepting the help. The only thing that seems "out of character" is how much he visibly worries in panel four. It's almost like a woman on the verge of becoming hysterical about how "someone should do something!" before she calms down and just does it herself, which is what he does. It's that word "maternal" everyone's been throwing around.
The second thing I wanted to touch upon is that the egg has been hatched, so… now what? Revolving around the baby, we can assume a matter of things. Is it a female? It could very well be. In fact, someone above made a very intriguing observation that perhaps maybe the reason the female population is so low is because they have a smaller shell tooth right before brith and are six times out of seven NOT able to break free. That has to be the smartest theory I have ever heard. The only possible debunk to the proposed idea is that females only have smaller shell teeth because they shave them down. The only way to fix this gap in what could be a solid theory is that we assume the females are just born with a small shell tooth that soon grows to the size of a male's. Then again, if that were true, wouldn't the nursery's nurses or even Vizlet have noticed this by now?
Either way, I am always eager to see where things lead.
