I've been saying for years it would be safer to have autonomous vehicles than most human drivers now. Gridlock could be solved too with intervehicular communication and speed algorithms.

I think the biggest hurdle to come will be public acceptance. Everyone's afraid of something like what happened to Will Smith in I-Robot.
