2013.
The PCS Institute cosmos division detected some strange activity on the Moon. An expeditionary team of seven was sent up to investigate and, if necessary, contain whatever was causing the anomalous signals. After a long flight they managed to land close to the anomaly. What awaited them upon arrival was a cadre of insectoid creatures, designated as "Selenites" in the notes of one Mr. Byron Bedford, a member of the first pseudo modern lunar expedition.
One of the Selenites volunteered to show them the source of the disturbance as it has botched their own attempts to make sense of it. "Maybe the hairless apes will have a better chance at understanding the abnormality, if not no skin of our backs" is what they might have thought. The Selenite volunteer led them on a several hour long hike. All the while they felt that they were being watched. Their guide however dismissed their concern, saying that "the so called Amazons are merely scouting them and determining them as harmless or not". At the end of the journey, they've reached a vast crater. Down in it's center was an immense, black, sleek rectangular artifact. Upon close inspection it was determined that the object, now classified as PCS no. 1968, was broken in several places. The cracked pieces floated near the object's central mass. The team's instruments went crazy, showing readouts of all kinds of energy signatures. None of them were lethal true but the amount and variety of energies contained within this seemingly homogeneous thing astounded them. Their guide explained that the monolithic artifact had been present for centuries on the Moon. That it had arrived with a crash in, what was on Earth, the Second Century AD. It's collision resulted in the damage to it's form they saw on it. Ever since that day, it has been glitching in strange ways, like bringing things and people from Earth from time to time, or more recently, negatively effecting the H.A.L. ship computer on the International Space Station in 2001. The above-mentioned "Amazones" were one such incidental visitors. They had the good fortune to have appeared within a Selenite underground city, where they could be helped and outfitted with required apparatus' to survive on the surface, unlike the pitiable travelers in the ancient ship that arrived mere weeks after the Monolith's crash. Most of them died from the sudden and violent displacement while the others were stricken by the Moon's airless atmosphere. The remarkably preserved galleon and it's long dead passengers still lay near the crater to this very day.
With permission from the Selenite high rulers, the PCS was allowed to construct a containment/monitoring station around the artifact to keep tabs on it and study it's nature and origins.
