Jake and Neytiri - Fanart
EDIT: FOR THE LAST MOTHERFUCKING TIME: THIS IS NOT A MODIFIED/PHOTOSHOPPED SCREENSHOT. The screenshot WAS, YES, a reference, but I NEVER used it in the art itself, only referenced FROM it. Like when you draw your dog. Or paint from a photo.
That said, know your art people. Fanart isn't just drawing na'vi sex.

First off: Yes, this is done with an image I'm sure everyone knows well. But even though it's done from it, I t wasn't a walk in the park. No tracing or pasting and stuff used, and took me around 8~10 hours, often in little details. But since I'm sure there's boudn to be some people who still think art done from life/photos/movies etc isn't art...there it is. Keep in mind this is just a tribute for a movie I really liked, not a substitute or moneymaking attempt over it.
Regardless, this was extremely fun to do. Painted this all night and all this afternoon, while listening to the Movie's OST...magical, really. I really tried to do something from mind, but nothing was helping, so...It was also because I really wanted to practice Painter for a while, given the hours of study I recently spent. originally 1280x800, each character in a Layer, only used Oil Pastels.
And regardless of all this...those two are so cute. X3

-nod- Right, and i think thats how it should be.
Like..tracing is a useful tool, but it doesnt belong in people's galleries. I hate people who post traced stuff. Specially when its obvious.
This is in no way a slur against your art. Just a small rant.
n_n This is very lovely.

Tracing is a pointless tactic, most times you can grantee the out come will as flat as fuck because you dont get the build up of form and understanding of the structure from a 'from scratch' drawing.
Overall, I agree tracing sucks!, weather this is traced or not, I say no more as not my area to argue

lol i love this quote (from my mind, it may be a bit off) from the book Drawing On The Right Side Of The Brain
art is just exactly copying what is in front of you, (life/photos/movies/or even in front of you in your mind), since that seems to be the hardest thing,
so yea you did an awesome job !!!! and i bet it was 10 hours of pure pleasure and fun ... keep it up ...

If I had to make a guess, I'd say it was the nose. We are so conscious of what human noses look like, and noses are really huge for us in recognizing people's faces. Maybe the flat, squarish nose is just easier to do? Having never tried drawing a nose like that, I can only assume. xD
Because some things are harder to draw than others, varying from person to person. Human faces and cat faces are vastly different, and those differences can cause trouble for some people, hence why I asked. Like with still life, some objects are harder to draw because of odd shapes, or reflective surfaces, etc. etc..
Getting back to the original point you were trying to make; Yes, he was copying an image, but he DREW that copy. Saying he didn't draw the faces is 100% incorrect.

If you're trying to get that technical about it, then even drawing from memory is copying. You're simply remembering how something that was pre-made looked, and putting it down on paper.
By that same logic, any artist who drew/painted a portrait, or still life didn't really draw/paint it, because they were copying what was sitting in front of them.

And yet you still have to remember what something looks like in order to draw it. If you don't memorize what a cat looks like you can't very well draw one, now can you? A drawing may not be identical to what a person originally saw, but they're copying its form.
As for carbon copying, this picture ISN'T a carbon copy. It's very close because of his skill, and attention to detail, but it's not a perfect clone. He drew what he saw in front of him, plain and simple. However, there are artists who have photographic memories: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAyhz2m-UuQ
If it's such an easy thing to just copy images, then you do it. Copy the same image. It should be a snap since you're just copying, and not actually drawing it.

God, this is absolutely KILLER.
Loving every bit -- all the little details. The thumbnail just makes it look like you uploaded the *actual* picture. Fantastic!
And I agree with the soundtrack -- it makes me get all emotional because I remember the movie so well, I've seen it so many times. @_@

The sheer act of painting this was an act of devotion to the movie that is not lost on me, regardless of the fact that it IS an exact copy of the famous still frame. BUT, that in and of itself takes a ton of skill to do without direct tracing... I can't do it, and I'd like to see someone else here who can.
Huh, so that's what you think? I don't do that kind of shit, never did. And don't you come barging in talking about things you don't know.
Oh, and just an fyi, here's a WIP shot: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/3233093/

You obviously haven't been in the furry fandom very long, have you? There is such a thing as fan art, you stupid git >:( Just because it's from a scene from the movie doesn't mean he's claiming it as his own. He did it all by himself, and gives full credit where it's due. Now go away :(
Oh my god this is sooo beautiful!! And fuck those people who think this was tracxed. Even if you're stupid you can look at it full-view you can tell it was made by a human hand. I absolutely adore the painted quality of this. This is so worthy of being resized and pframed!!! <3<3 Would you mind if I did that? :O
Modify: To take an existing image and change it. a.k.a., the starting piece was the screenshot itself.
Now look at this. http://www.furaffinity.net/view/3233093/
If you still think it's a 'modified screenshot', then you just ignored a lot of art online.
Lastly, look at my previous stuff. I've never done screenshot modding before. WHY whould I do it now?
Please think before writing crap. kthx.

the different ways you can tell that this isent the original just painted over is if you look at this pic and the ref pic that the artist used it that you look at her earring it is differentially shaped and the strokes of the tablet pen a clearly able to see ( like on the hair and stuff) and the fact that the artist has a wip version of the drawing^^
people just need to study the picture more instead of making wrong conclusions
i really like this piece very well done ^^
