Backlash this short comic places 'Jesse Cole' in a scene "King of the Hill's" Bobby faced in the 2001 episode titled "Chasing Bobby". Bobby is trying to walk home from a car dealership in the next town over, and gets caught in a heavy rainstorm. Encountering a section of flooded road he attempts to walk around on the shoulder, but the ground had been plowed up and has turned to deep mud, in which Bobby loses one of his sneakers. Rather than retrieve the mired shoe, he groans and plods on. Here is an excerpt with the relevant scene.
Whatever circumstances led Jesse here into the same predicament probably differ from Bobby's, but they have led him here, and like the rest of his peer group, he is fated to encounter situations that end with the loss of one or both of his shoes, in this case a pair of tan topsider moccasins.
Technical:
First order of business was rendering the look of very-wet-ness. The scene takes place after dark, during a heavy rainstorm. While a bit long-winded in execution, the backdrop wasn't terriby difficult--I just imitated the look of the KOTH backdrop. This being at nighttime, I didn't have any shading to worry about since there was no light source in the scene. I sampled colors from screengrabs of the video excerpt linked above, and the rest was freehanded. What I did have to figure out was the wetness effects, and to that end I established separate layers for wetness effects on Jesse's clothes and pavement, and another for all the raindrops slashing across each panel. The wet road was suggested by drawing in semi-transparent reflections of objects resting on it, distorting them a bit as they faded to make the pavement look like an uneven coating of water. I'll talk about some additional aspects of my work on this comic on the other pages.
Digital drawing done with Krita 4.2.9. Fourteen layers, 271MB in-app, 21MB on-disk. 9 hours, 2 minutes total editing time as per Krita's internal project timer
