[c][UTO] Solar Harvesters
Due to Sol's inability to charge erestal, establishing a cycling supply chain of charged erestal cores going in, while depleted cores are sent out of the system became one of the first great hurdles of integrating humanity's home into the United Treaty Organization.
Alpha Centauri, as both a triple star system and the closest one to Sol, was the typical destination for erestal to be recharged and sent back to Earth, but regular ships' onboard solar arrays were inadequate for charging the vast quantities of cores of varying sizes in a timely manner. Fleets of ships and their arrays were required to keep up with the growing demand. While Earth's allies were good for shipping the product into the system and taking depleted cores to Alpha Centauri for a recharge, it was an obvious dependency that needed addressing in the future.
The Alpha Centauri Solar Harvester was the proposed solution. A unique construct, none like it seen anywhere else in UTO space, it was to be a solar array of monstrous proportions built closest to Proxima Centauri, and meant to maintain the erestal cores of an entire system several light years away. It was humanity's first major interstellar construction, and with the expertise from their nonhuman allies, it became a major training ground for humanity's astronautical engineers.
The project became a symbol of cooperation with humanity's new friends, building trust between the species, while also elevating human independence as it simplified the supply chain down to a system of massive, human operated freighters.
While humans went on to develop nuclear fusion, diminishing the critical importance of the harvester, it still functions as an important part of human infrastructure for Sol. The rest of the system continued to develop into a home for humanity's largest shipyards, and the most heavily defended human system aside from Sol itself.
