You have to let them fall - you have to let them fail. Otherwise they'll never learn that they can fail - and that often failure has consequences. A major problem with too many people today that think they can do anything they want with no consequences if they are wrong or hurting others ...
But once they have fallen/failed there's no reason to leave them on the ground(snow), this is a good time to teach them values and better ways of doing things - and that helping teach others should be part of their own future. There will be a great many things you'll never be able to pay back, but you can pay it forward.
