I think that it is unrealistic that Aggretsuko saw this tall, dorito-shaped man with kind eyes and wisdom to impart and was not straight up down atrocious. Anyways, I love him and we are getting married come noon.

Hmm, I've been practicing them a lot lately, and have used a lot of tutorials. The way that I do it is that I will often, in my own time, find pictures that I can trace and break down into shapes to try and better understand how they form, and how I can simplify them to match my style somewhat. It is definitely a learning process. : P
Oh, I don't do proper backgrounds very often unless I have a specific idea, to be honest. A lot of the time, including with this picture, I'll just either leave it transparent or put some sort of a solid colored shape behind it to make it pop. If it's a piece I'm feeling especially proud of, I'll put a gradient or some sort of pattern or texture. With this one, I just used a sparkle brush that I found in a set on Clip Studio Assets and thought was cute. As for proper backgrounds, when I have that sort of energy: Lots of brainstorming, referencing, and pain, as well as liberal use of 3D assets where applicable.
Ohh. Hmm, when I can't think of a color, I'll often spend a lot of time just fiddling around with the color wheel and placing them down until I find one that I think looks nice with the rest of it. It can be time consuming, but eventually I find something I like, or if I can't I'll just go for transparent or white, haha.
Sometimes, I will use one of the same colors in my color correction layer, or I'll even put on a Multiply, Overlay, etc layer, mess with transparency if need be, copy one of the results from that, and then delete the layer and see if the color I got works well as a background.
That's kind of what I did with this one; the purple is what color the pants looked like when I had the gradient map on this turned up to 100%: https://tinyurl.com/crotchpurple

I share your feelings to a T. Retsuko was insane to let this absolute hunk of purity slip out of her hands. I really wish he would be brought back into the story. Not even for her sake, just mine.
Anyway, absolutely love this piece! Thank you for giving him the attention he deserves.

Right?? He was so damn gorgeous and kind hearted. If there was some way to be sure we'd be seeing him more in the next season, for basically any reason, I wouldn't even be worried about anything else that happened.
Thanks a ton! I'm really happy that you liked it. He absolutely deserves all the love in the world, and we can only hope that more will come to realize this truth. : P
