Something I've been meaning to show to people, as I'm asked quite a bit. So here's how a Dorbley lives. Not explained in this pic is The Algan which, for lack of a better comparison, is like The Dorbley Force. A real energy that makes them work and the better they know it, the more they can do - but its a lifetime commitment, much like a Jedi.
Also Dorbleys gain permanent mass as they age, so usually they like to add some height, thickness and fin length as they grow, just to make it more apparent from a distance their status
Any questions, please ask!

It is a grey area for sure. For the most part, since it attaches to simple creatures, yes, it acts like a parasite and consumes them. However, larger, smarter and more sentient creatures can fight back in a sense. Either just easily pulling the egg off or the ever so desired, become a Dorbley but keep your mind result! Hence - the aforementioned poaching.
Not quite. There's no way to tell of an egg is viable. Part of the Algan training they can do is to learn how to TF things. So if say, you fell in love with a Dorbley and wanted to convert for marriage, you could request a legal TF after much culture training and screening. All very professional and serious. It almost happens more these days than natural egg births!
