Pat is definitely inspired by the classic procedural detective Columbo, and if you haven't watched that series you should. He's just a bumbling little guy who knows that you killed your wife/secretary/etc and he's gonna prove it. He just needs to come up with a convoluted way to trick you into giving up the key piece of evidence. You might have thought you got away with it... but there's just one more thing.
