I wanted to like ff14. But it made me lose a friend of 15 years. Also since I played almost every other ff, the game is very "Been there done that". Also being told you are the CHOSEN ONE only to go into a raid with 20 other CHOSEN ONEs takes me out of the experience.
That's a massive shame that you lost a friend like that. :(
That being said, I can totally see where someone wouldn't be able to suspend disbelief on rallying other adventurers to your side, even though the MSQ does do a good job explaining some of these fundamental things much later in it's runtime, but I don't want to elaborate further on that.
As for the game's "Final Fantasy Theme Park" feel? I feel like FF14 does it's darnedest to put it's own twist on the tropes and setpieces it borrows from throughout the franchise and that it's the element I wished as a teenager that Final Fantasy 11 had. it strikes a very good balance of having these elements and also walking it's own path towards having some of the most compelling narratives I've ever experienced in a JRPG bar none.

I'm a huge FF fan. I even bought 14 (though since I keep refusing commissions, I don't have the money to use on the monthly subscription stuff). The only ones I didn't play are 11 and 13 though I'm quite aware of 13's story due to let's plays and other media. One of my fav spinoff FF games is getting shut down at the end of september as well (FF Record Keeper). With a set cast, the games are an experience everyone has in an equal way. Everyone gets the same Vivi, same Bartz or the same 4 kids in III (not talking about the remake even). Going through these games and then trying 14 is like "Oh hey that's 2. Oh hey that's 8. Hey this whole storyline is just 3 and Tactics! This is 6! Oh look Y'sh is blind and calls herself Matoya like FF1" Except to me it's just... worse? Like there's not enough of its own while riding too hard on all the previous entries and references. Conversely this is why I loved RK. It had you go through all major battles of all games and such, but after it had a mode where the RK cast visited worlds of the FF games and there were these meta moments of the MC knowing what's going to happen or if someone is about to die etc but being unable to change it lest it would change history (all FF games are presented as events that all happened in the history of the game's world), and then its own storyline while letting you fight bosses with any mix of ff cast you wanted.
Sorry for the ramble. Yeah losing that specific friend hurts really REALLY bad...
