A story from 2021, in which the Chosen One Sam marries the Demon Lord Jamie
"So, how are you feeling Jamie?" Sam asks, tugging at their own wedding dress. "Nervous?"
"Y-yeah. I was just born a week ago, and now I'm getting married to a human? I'm not sure any Demon Lord has done anything like this before."
"If it makes you feel any better, this is definitely a first for me, too."
"Are you nervous?"
"Extremely. But hey, I didn't go to the underworld and back just to run away now." Sam's gaze drifts down, and they find themself looking at Jamie's dress. It's a nice dress, and pretty expensive, but being The Chosen Onetm comes with a few perks. "You look great, by the way."
"Oh, thanks. You too." A brief silence falls over the room. "You know, I had no intention of ever marrying you when you barged into my castle and proposed, and right after I'd been born at that. I mean, I'm a Demon Lord; I know what I'm supposed to do, and this definitely isn't it, but... You're special, Sam."
Sam blushes, still not used to such compliments. "Thanks. I... also wasn't really thrilled with the idea either; I was just, you know, doing my job. Chosen One and all that. But here I am a week later, and spending my life with you sounds nice."
"Yeah, same here. See you at the alter?"
"Alright."
With that, Sam and Jamie share a hug before leaving for their respective rooms to make the final preparations. Sam enters the temple dressing room and sits down, taking a deep breath.
*SLAM*
"SAM!!" A robed figure marches into the room, and Sam relaxes upon recognizing them as the Sage.
"Oh my gosh, dude, you nearly gave me a heart attack!"
"Oh I almost gave YOU a heart attack? How do you think I was holding up when I heard you were MARRYING the Demon Lord?!"
"Wait, what? That's what you told me to do, isn't it? You know, 'you must journey through the underworld and take the Demon Lord's heart', and all that? Or else the world is doomed?"
"Take the- I meant LITERALLY, you foolish child!"
"Literally? What does that even- Wait, did you want me to KILL them!?"
"Yes! You were supposed to take their heart and bring it back so it could be sealed away before it can reincarnate! What did you think the magic sword was for?!"
"Um, the underworld monsters? Duh?"
The Sage lets their head fall into their hand. "Why on Earth would you interpret the prophecy that way?"
"Why on Earth would I interpret it to mean I had to KILL SOMEONE?! Like, that's not a thing people usually do!"
"And MARRYING a DEMON LORD is?!"
"Last I checked, marriage is a lot more common that murder!"
"Ugh, are you truly so- No, this is fine, it's not too late. You still have the sword, yes?"
"Yeah, why? Oh. No, nope, no way, not happening. I am not killing Jamie."
"You foolish, emotional child. You are the Chosen One, it is your duty to defeat the Demon Lord. If you don't, the world will enter another Age of Darkness! The gates of the underworld will open, and the Demon Lord will lead the demons on a conquest against Earth! You saw the ruins on your journey, didn't you? Do you want that to happen again?"
"But... but that won't happen! Jamie is nice, they wouldn't do that!"
"When will you learn? The prophecy clearly states that if the Demon Lord is not sealed, then chaos and despair will-"
"Screw the prophecy! Jamie is my friend! I won't kill my friend just because you want me to follow the script! Darkness, demons, whatever happens, we'll just have to deal with it. If my purpose is to kill, then I'll happily fail my role as Chosen One!"
The Sage opens their mouth to speak, but a bell suddenly sounds: The signal to start the ceremony. Confused as they were, the townspeople didn't question the Chosen One's commands, and went along with the wedding preparations. As Sam turns to leave, the Sage shouts. "You imbecile! If you don't fulfill your destiny, then we are all doomed!"
"I don't care. Maybe I should, but I don't. If my destiny is that rotten, then I reject it. If I live in a world where the only choices are kill or be killed, then I'll find Death and I'll marry them too!" Sam approaches the door, stopping to give one last look at the old Sage. "I refuse to believe in a world that awful, so take your script, your destiny, and your stupid sparkly sword, and leave. I've got a wedding to attend."
"So, how are you feeling Jamie?" Sam asks, tugging at their own wedding dress. "Nervous?"
