There was a note inside the parcel, in strange handwriting.
Dear Bryce,
Any great inventor is in need of a useful assistant.
I grant you one of mine.
Your biggest fan,
𐃆𐃆
Inside the box was a plush ferret doll, about the size of a feral variant of the species. Its eyes promptly opened when Bryce picked it up from its wrapping. It extended its arms and began to speak in a sweet, singsongy voice.
"Hi! I'm your new best friend! What's your name?"
It had the sense of being a product designed for small children (it immediately snuggled up to Bryce offering a “big hug”), but its capabilities soon proved to extend beyond providing comfort. Bryce discovered that it could walk on its own, talk, tell jokes…
...and even sing songs. Beautifully, in full polyharmony.
In fact, the ferret demonstrated it could write much better music than Bryce could come up with.
After some experimentation, Bryce fell to the temptation of exploiting the toy’s musical talents to bypass his longstanding writer’s block. However, the more he relied on it, the more his sense of unease deepened.
Where did the doll come from? Who was the mysterious stranger who sent it to him? And how did a mere kids’ toy have such advanced capabilities?
It eventually occurred to Bryce that he had never checked the toy’s tag. It told a story he couldn’t even begin to make sense of.

It raised more questions than answers. “2043” had to be a misprint, but neither “SullyTek Industries” nor “SPEAR Cybernetics” seemed to be companies that actually existed.
Was this all some sort of elaborate prank? Whatever it was, results were results, and it still wasn't exactly easy work. The ferret never reliably obeyed his commands, and whenever it felt like striking up a chorus, Bryce needed to be ready to listen. And he needed to be ready to write, too, since the toy got “sad” when it guessed it was being recorded (though it loved duets)!
The clock was ticking. Bryce had to come up with some sort of new composition before his antlers fully came in and he lost his onstage finesse. If everything worked out, his newfound success would more than make up for its uncanny roots...
