Humans! We've all seen the movie, but trust us, the dragons DO NOT like random strangers patting their noses. If you are not family with the dragon, don't do it. All dragons agree. Whatever was going through Toothless' mind was his business, but dragons in the real world don't want anything to do with following the paths of wolves to ingratiate themselves to humans as subservient beasts. Dragons suggest getting a bear or a crocodile or whatever humans enjoy having as a pet that is a constant mortal danger to them if they need a thrill in condescending to something inhuman.

Princess is only willing to be Tola's pet because he treats her with kindness and respect. (And she also likes it. It was her idea to have it go from "the act we put on for the public's benefit" to "an actual arrangement". It's hard to beat having a good friend who cares for her, especially compared to trying to scrounge for food in the wild. Even worse when you've barely been a dragon for a month. And your prior life was getting a Computer Science degree on Earth... >.> )
