Research Log Entry (Subject - Lysse, a.k.a. Lydia-β): As part of the 'autodialer' program cataloguing alternate realities (documenting various geospatial and quantum parameters, divergence levels from baseline realities, and so forth) via the portal generation system, I'd always considered the possibility of encountering alternate versions of myself. While not a specific goal of the research, it has been an item of general curiosity, and since it's my project, I get to pick the objectives.
Considering the sheer number of possible combinations available, the chances are extraordinarily slim. Indeed, something like 79% of catalogued universes are near-empty voids (maybe the Big Bang went differently most of the time?), so it's unusual to actually find Earth, even more unusual to find anyone living on it, and even rarer to have that life resemble anything familiar (to say nothing of individual people). But then again, it's just as likely as any other possible combination, so it's essentially all random.
Realities that register as near-baseline are subject to closer scrutiny. Communications are automatically sampled, internet web-crawler programs are established... essentially enough data collected and analyzed to determine what sort of reality this is. As part of that, there are a number of 'me-detection' parameters, ranging from 'googling' (or equivalent) my name, topographical scans places I've lived, and some basic facial recognition programs applied to available imagery. In general, these come up negative, or register as false positives.
At least until the scan of universe 6654808 came back.
One of the more obscure parameters of the check is to sample any communications active on a radio frequency close to cosmic background radiation, corresponding to the default setting on a home-built transmitter I made when I was 13... I never really meshed into any of the proper radio clubs, so I would occasionally chat with the universe itself as an alternative to talking to myself (not that it ever answered back). I didn't maintain the practice, but it seemed like a fairly unusual thing to do, so I kept it on the list of parameters.
It was a little shocking to find the frequency not only active in '808, but broadcasting repeated loops of questions and statements asked in MY voice. Once the initial surprise wore off, it was replaced with confusion, given that the recordings were erratic, things like "Why are there only hard and soft tacos when I actually want something in between?" and "One of my pens fell behind the couch, but I think it likes it better there." plus what sounded like off-key singing in the shower (god I hope I don't actually sound like that).
Confusion aside, it took a little more research before I was able to track her down. She still has my name, but prefers to go by 'Lysse', and she's something of a freelance artist... the transmitter and the recordings were actually part of one of her performative displays that was always kept running (and periodically added to). A little more digging taught me a lot about her... laid back, adaptable, but immensely creative when properly motivated. Very much a 'just go with it' sort of confidence, and apparently a bit of a party girl in the artistic circles.
Once I finally deemed '808 safe enough to actually visit, I worked up the nerve to actually approach her. She was... remarkably chill about the whole thing, and considered it to be 'pretty cool' (at least once she came to the conclusion that I wasn't a hallucination). She's definitely 'me' in a genetic sense, but lived a very different life with no obvious points of divergence. There were a few similar events, such as how she 'earned' her green tint as a result of an explosion when trying to concoct some kind of homebrew dye. I've tried to interview her more thoroughly on multiple occasions, which is sometimes difficult given how... distractible... she can be. She often refers to me as her 'Left Brain Twin' (though neither of us had siblings, so I don't know how well that translates). We have kind of become friends of sorts (there's probably some weird psychology paper to be written on all this), I've visited her multiple times in '808, and she's been to my home reality as well. At first it was all interviews and so forth, but we have done a few shared meals, sleepovers, and movie nights. I guess you could say that we've gotten used to one another (probably more of a hurdle on my end than hers, given how I get around new people) and I guess we enjoy each other's company.
I can't quite say for sure, but I think she might've tried to flirt with me once or twice, and I don't even know how to react to that.
