Danza wanted to have a go at reworking his design, so I thought I'd give a go at what I'd do with the character.
I 'therapodified' his face a little, thickening it and making the cheek spines irregular sizes. I plated the horns and made the eyebrow ridges sort of melt into the pointed shape.
I gave him light blue topshading and black facial markings, extending the white of the lower jaw to the upper lip, mirroring a lot of lizard markings found in nature.
Lessened the number of stripes overall as the number of stripes on his original/current design was mentioned as a concern, but still kept them a deliberate feature. Kept other features pointed out as desirable, such as white palms and bottoms of feet, and a black line surrounding the white parts of the design. My aim was to keep the design easily replicable, but break up the relative monotony of plain blue and black. Subtly darkened the feet and hands to draw the eye closer to the core of the body and the face.

Had a feeling it was Danza from the thumbnail. Goes to show that reiterating on a tried & tested design can carry over some of that "it-factor." How lovely. I think that you did great work here & it would be very exciting to see it done in Danza's own style as well. You gave a lot of broad quality to it that would stand out well with the perspectives that he uses. Also digging that the upper lip got a bit of that jawline color. I don't think I've ever seen that done before. :o
