I kinda suck at backgrounds so i tend to avoid doing them but i do want to get better at them. Clouds and smoke are things that are a pain for me to do so i did this here practice pic of some white fluffy clouds.

It is wierd how a thing as simple as a cloud is rough to get out. So far, it looks like you colored the background then started erasing to make the form of the cloud.
I most likely use a white pen and color in the edges then use a marker to fill everything in before shading.
Recently, I've been airbrushing clouds. Going over on layers and leaving some background spots in to make it look like the shading in the clouds.

Hehehe, pretty awesome cloud man : D
Try and make it a bit fluffy around the top : ).
Little tip bro.
Backgrounds, as stressful and painful to get to them, it's best to TRY and make them fun.
Do landscapes, draw more background objects and such and work with lighting and atmosphere/fog : )
Lately, I've been trying to do more and more backgrounds to make it feel more "natural" than a chore.
Use references and stuff for trees, buildings, etc. Do super quick sketches of backgrounds, slap in a simple perspective, build on it.
Background detail doesn't come, man... you gotta make it >: 3.
