"I'm not what Oren wants."
Just what does Oren want? Hmmm, he's keeping Egg (who was mutilated under his watch) around simply because she's useful at digging up the ore he smelts for copper. He was only interested in keeping Rask around as, for more or less, an attack dog.
I dare say that he (and the others) don't seem interested in equality, it seems like their end game might instead be domination.
Just what does Oren want? Hmmm, he's keeping Egg (who was mutilated under his watch) around simply because she's useful at digging up the ore he smelts for copper. He was only interested in keeping Rask around as, for more or less, an attack dog.
I dare say that he (and the others) don't seem interested in equality, it seems like their end game might instead be domination.
So many comments of disappointment with Oren. Come on, he single-handedly started a revolution! But a real, lasting social movement takes a lot more than one guy's vision. More people interacting can always think of more, better ideas. It was like a dozen guys that wrote the US constitution, not just one. It was revolutionary, yet they knew it was deeply flawed. 25 amendments later, it still needs a lot of work.
Think of the Wright brothers. In less than five years they made breakthroughs in airfoil performance, aerodynamic control scheme, propellers and power plants, and they put it all together to make history's first functional airplane. But then, that was basically it for them. They made a fortune off licensing fees, but their own designs barely progressed past that point. It was lots of other people who got involved and made an explosion of different aircraft designs and developments that the Wrights never dreamed of.
Oren made a great speech at the end of volume one. Of course there were many more before that one. But it's only natural that the Hollow residents who have been his manpower and foot-soldiers need to start contributing in the good ideas department too.

Good point and Sybil was the one to bring in something new to better the Hollow, a predator that could help shape it to become better. Only Oren in his single-mindedness only saw another weapon to defend and destroy just like Hemlock. And Rask is also quite right. All Oren ever forges ware weapons for attack, never something to defend or make their lives better.
Yep. When Rask arrived at the Hollow Oren 100% (as we saw in his outburst when Rask let Swift go) did not see an animal searching for a better life than the strive he was running from but a breathing "tooth" that can destroy the enemies of the Hollow alongside Hemlock (his other breathing "tooth" as he never tried to help her find closure but just gave her a weapon to be more effective). And others said Egg is only allowed to stay cause she was mutiliated under his watch and is useful for his smeltering.
And I think with the second to last panel it is clear why Sibyl was even out there searching for predators to bring to the hollow and why she told Rask's uncle to bring a spark here. Rask was her attempt to get Oren to rethink his bigotted stance on pred and prey. Cause that sentence shows that she knew Oren's stance.
Next page will be interesting cause that was a gauntlet thrown in the face of Oren by Rask with that deadpan comment. And I hope that Oren will defend himself so Rask could point out that he wasn't the first weapon Oren made out of a living being, as that privilege goes solely to Hemlock.
