Was cleaning up, and I found this old high school art project I made. It was a tracing assignment specifically about finding something and trying to recreate it, I think; pretty sure I used official art for this, but it’s been too long now for me to remember. Still really proud of this, though, especially when my art style back then was nowhere close to the level of my style now (and I still don’t think my current art is on a professional level).
While relying too heavily on tracing can be a problem, it can be helpful for budding artists. Speaking from experience, recreating other art can help develop a foundation for your own art style: I spent some time shortly into college tracing MLP characters for practice, and that built the style I’ve used for original work ever since. I recommend it if you want to try making art for yourself or want to immerse yourself in another style to see what you pick up; just so long as you remember it’s just for practice.
