Last year, as a celebration for the release of Resident Evil 4 remake, I did some sexy pics of Rebecca, Jill and Claire, alongside a quick and personal retrospective of my early years as a RE fan.
Now, as a celebration for the complete rerelease of the original PS1 trilogy in GOG.com, I want to continue where I left last year. However, I'm not continuing the series retrospective. I just wanna finish my story with RE3.
Warning, long post.
Ok, so Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. the very first RE game I played AND completed.
Back in 1999, my best friend and I tried to play the Resident Evil franchise with RE2, but we failed miserably not being able to pass the very first screen, since we had no idea how to use tank controls or how to aim and shoot. We said "f*ck that" and continued our lives with another games (I was kinda glad 'cause, in secret, I was a scared little boy).
A year later, when the whole RE mania exploded in my city, the only game I saw people playing was, well, Resident Evil, so it finally peaked my interest (Funny thing: due everyone's poor English skills, people called the game "Residente Vil" (Vile Resident in Spanish). Even to this day, despite knowing how to pronounce the name now, some friends keep calling it "Residente Vil"), However, remembering how Leon was mauled alive by zombies due to my ineptitude with tank controls made me doubt to give it another chance, but then, I knew him: A little weird guy who started talking to me at the arcades. He was playing a game (can't remember which one) and got stucked in a specific part. I helped him and then we began talking and became friends. His name was Bryan (If you wanna know more about him, I reccomend you to read my previous retrospectives).
Anyway, we ended up talkig about RE and how awesome it was, but due my poor skills with the game, I never gave it another chance. "Do you have a memory card?" he said. I said "yes" and then, he gave me a copy of his file with everything unlocked but the numerous epilogues. "try it now".
Back then, I just got a brand new PS1 programmed to read pirate games (don't judge me!), So I bought a copy of RE3, which was the file Bryan gave me. I started the game and then, like the T-virus, I finally got infected by the RE mania.
Not having to worry about item management and having the strongest weapons already unlocked erased the fear factor, which I didn't mind (I don't like horror, to begin with) and replaced it with pure, unadulterated fun. By that moment, the games were already translated to spanish, so I finally learned the game lore, which made me even more fan of the series. I beat the game over and over and over. I unlocked the 8 hidden episodes, and then more. but, as you imagined, I got bored of playing the same RE and, despite still being afraid of playing the game the normal way. I was so hooked to the story that I gave the other RE games a chance (once again, I invite you to read my RE0, RE1 and RE2 last years retrospectives). After that, I became less scared of horror games and I entered the amazing world of survival horror games (they're not even that scary. I just hate jumpscares. That's all).
With now a lot of horror games under my belt and with all its highs and lows, Resident Evil remains as my favorite horror game franchise and, despite not really enjoying how the entire video game industry is right now, it always hypes me seeing a new entry in the franchise announced and now that more than 20 years later I could, once again, play the original trilogy, I felt like a little boy again. Boy, do I love Resident Evil...
One last thing, about replaying the original trilogy, I already beat and unlocked everything for RE1 and RE2 (I had no idea that RE1 PC had exclusive infinite ammo weapons, heck, even RE2 PC had the "Konami code" for unlimited ammo!... wish I knew that before). But for some reason, when I started playing RE3, I didn't feel the same hype as the other games, which was weird since that was the game I was hoping to play the most. After all, RE2 may be my favorite game from the classic trilogy, but RE3 is still the very first game I beat and enjoyed, so it was weird I wasn't enjoying it. I played some minutes but, as soon as I arrived to the police station I couldn't keep going for how uninterested I was... then I noticed it: I wanted to enjoy the experience the way I did before. So, noticing that "The Mercenaires" is unlocked from the start in the PC version, I played it over and over and over until I unlocked the unlimited ammo. I started the game once again and THEN I finally true enjoyed the whole experience as before. I can definitely enjoy RE3 only with everything unlocked. That's how I started playing the franchise and that's the only way I can enjoy this game (Heck, even when I bought on sale RE3 Remake years before, I also bought the "unlock everything" to play it that way.
So yeah, that's pretty much about it. I truly reccomend to buy and enjoy these pieces of history. Thanks for your attention. Hope you like the pic and, who knows? Maybe in the future I'll continue this retrospective with Code :Veronica and RE4, my favorite game in the franchise. Until then, have a good one! ^^
