"W-we have arrived, my lord... this is where Fujiko-san was last seen" announces the man accompanying you, with an obvious fearful face.
You carefully scan the area; said woman has been missing for a mere couple of days, but in those days, people also have also reported hearing and seeing eery movements of one or multiple strange creatures, accompanied by screams... a witness even rambled in terrified shock of something 'neither man nor animal' roaming that land... no wonder the man was afraid.
"Say, if you were to make camp or seek shelter for the night in such a place, where would you recommend going?" you ask, trying to make him at ease; you actually have a good answer already, though he's more familiar with the place than you, so he could still give good insight.
Monsters are generally more intelligent than what most people give them credit for, and you have thus learned to predict their moves by asking yourself things like 'what would I do... where would I go' etcetera. And your man doesn't disappoint:
"N-normally I'd go towards the mountain's side… there are plenty of nooks and recesses where one could take refuge from the elements. Though here the terrain is less stable and known for small landslides, s-so I'd go a little more eastward..."
"Care to take me there?" you then ask.
The man freezes in silence, only to eventually give a somewhat dodgy answer:
"W-would it be wise, my lord?"
You give him a little smirk as you prepare to dismount.
"If there is indeed some kind of monster or Yokai awaiting for us... no. But I don’t have the luxury of running away"
"Do you not have fear, my lord?" he asks; if you have any, you are doing a good job at hiding it, because he seems equally worried and amazed.
"Only fools have no fear... the real question is: do you let fear control you, or do you control the fear?” you say, quoting your Master; “That’s what makes me a Slayer, and you a rice farmer..."
Fully dismounted with your trusty wakizashi on your left and your mighty auto-revolver on your right, you hand over the bridle to the man who has been guiding you this far.
"If you prefer not to go any further, then wait for me here and guard my horse. If by sunset I haven’t yet returned, keep it... as compensation for your troubles"
"Hai, Slayer-sama..." he says with a slight bow of the head.
It doesn't take long for you to find the opening of a suspiciously large cave; judging by the tracks going in and out, it is dwelled... furthermore, the tracks appear as 'neither man or animal'...
You pull out and cock the auto-revolver, silently making your way in while your second-hand rests on the hilt of your wakizashi at the ready. The cave extends much further into the ground than you expected though, with side-tunnels as well! Leading you deeper and deeper into the creature's lair, where you are at disadvantage... should you instead try to lure whatever is in, out?
Suddenly, you are distracted by muffled noises of... whimpering and weeping, echoing from behind a corner. There's a faint light coming from it, casting the shadow of a feminine silhouette...
However, your experience tells you better: it wouldn't be the first time a monster tries to lure you by mimicking human noises and looks. Reaching into your pouch, you pick and light up a flare and with a well calibrated throw, you send it bouncing past that corner. Its sudden brightness illuminates the dark tunnel, causing a very inhuman shriek: sure enough, the feminine shadow raises on its many spider legs and crawls away, revealing its true shape!
You promptly give chase through the tunnels, as fast as humanly possible through the humid, slippery cave's floor. Even then, your experienced senses remain alert and so you spot just in time a massive boulder hanging from the ceiling, held by spiderwebs and connected by a strand of spider silk to a further section of the lair... you correctly imagine that by cutting it, one could remotely activate the trap and squash any intruder!
"Clever girl..." you tell yourself, firing two well-placed shots to free the boulder, making it fall before you, instead of onto you!
Resuming your pursuit, you catch only a few fleeting glimpses of the big, half-spider monster: with its sudden, unpredictable turns through the cave's sharp corners, it makes for a hard target… causing you to waste a couple more shots. The last two bullets have to be decisive!
However, after more turns, you also begin to feel like moving in a rather roundabout way. It must be trying to leave you behind in the maze-like tunnels to make a run for the exit!
You try to chase faster, and that's when you finally slip, falling flat on your back... winding you out and making you lose the grip on your gun!
Conversely, the creature had actually crawled up the wall and into the ceiling at the last turn, ready to catch you by surprise... so when you then attempt to recover and roll on your side to pick up the auto-revolver, it has ample time to squirt a jet of sticky silk, glueing the gun to the floor, and your hand with it!
You know that half-spider must be right behind you at this point, you can almost feel it approaching for a decisive, final blow... and yet you gamble your life by waiting a few more moments. Holding onto the wakizashi at your side with your remaining free hand, you wait for the perfect moment to be in range for a sudden turn, followed by a swift slashing motion...
"YAAAAA!" you go.
The blade stops mid-air, upright... its tip just an inch away from the creature's face, who smiles mockingly at you, remaining still while hanging upside-down from the ceiling.
"Nice try, fu fu fu fu..." says the Jorōgumo…
At first glance, one could be forgiven for mistaking her as a woman, albeit slender and unnaturally thin-waisted... but close up, anyone could see past the kimono and makeup to notice the porcelain-like, chitinous skin, and the rather insectoid, or arachnid, face. There is of course the obvious spider lower body too, but the Jorōgumo knows better than fully revealing herself to her victims before it’s too late for them…
"That was quite fun, I never experienced the thrill of being hunted down by a Slayer..." she continues; her voice having a high-pitched, unnerving tone.
"Then why don't you free me, and fight me fairly?" you say, still pointing your wakizashi at her in a threatening manner. Your chances of survival are currently very low, but Yokai are strange creatures; with some luck, you may still talk your way out of this...
"But I don't want to fight you, fu fu fu fu!"
"Right, I bet you want to eat me... like how you did with Fujiko-san, I assume?"
"Fujiko-san...?" she wonders, her large eyes blinking a couple times before those diamond-shaped pupils returned to ogle you.
"...Ah, you must be speaking of her…" she concludes, pointing at someone not far away, in the dark; you notice only now the poor woman, still alive but completed gagged and trapped in a cocoon of spiderwebs, wriggling helplessly and staring at the whole scene with an horrified look on her face.
"You will join her soon~" she finished, lowering herself closer to you...
"Has no one taught you not to play with your food?!" you retaliate, swinging your blade.
But much to your surprise, four additional spider limbs erupt from her back, catching your wakizashi and yanking it out of your hands with ease!
"You are getting it all wrong, Slayer-sama... you are not my food. You are my... playthings~" she says, thus sealing your fate as she cocoons you just as she did with Fujiko-san...
