I've never lived in a region with access to the sea, so every trip to the sea was surrounded by romance for me.
It's easy to fall into melancholy when looking at the sea - and I often thought of a mermaid or siren character, hopelessly in love with someone they can't be with: because it would be in the nature of such a creature to drag the chosen one to the bottom of the sea, but because of the truth of the feeling they restrain themselves, preferring to just be at a distance, to avoid temptation.
So, according to my idea, the character is sad because of separation from her beloved - or yearns for someone who is no longer alive, hmm? or maybe in the medallion there is even his own portrait from the time when he was still a human?..
