In a proper game, Helpful Sign would have had more presence. He'd be the save points, the little marker as you enter new areas. It's a little harder to do that in a novel form, but I'd like to think some Perchance to Dream readers are like "I know that name" and make the connection. Never underestimate the reader's ability to piece things together, even if it's entertainingly wrong.
Regardless, time for some clarity and setting lore to help Avery find her way. Let's worldbuild! With tacos.
