no. 25: Sucy - Little Witch Academia
The original concept of my Halloween countdowns started as a shout out to villainy. A brief moment to celebrate the bad guys who keep our media going. Of course through the passage of time and altering themes, this concept has faded a bit, but I always try to keep it mostly intact. In abandoning a theme for this year I went back into a heavy focus on villains for the line up, shit post most of them may be. However, it's important to remember that this concept can be thrown to the four winds for characters who perfectly embody the spirit of Halloween. After all, that's truly what we're here for, is it not?
Such would be the case for Sucy. On the surface, Little Witch Academia doesn't really have a Halloween aesthetic at all, despite it's reliance on witches. That is except for my little mushroom loving, poison brewing, beloved little gremlin Sucy, who is 99% of the reason I even watched the series and I'd wager that rings true of most people, if I'm being honest.
You see for those who may not know, within my overall obsession with Halloween there few specific weak points for me which never fail to entice me. Certain imagery or tropes within the Halloween aesthetic that immediately sum up what the holiday is to me when I see them. Such things as: Jack-O-Lanterns, Frankenstein monsters and traditional crone witches. Something about the crusty old cackling hag brewing a potion and flying around on her broom to cause mischief that just brings a smile to my face every time. It's why I have such an undying love for Gruntilda from Banjo-Kazooie or Witch Hazel of Looney Tunes fame. No, Sucy may not be an old hag and lacks the warty green skin or the giant nose-(she'd have placed higher if she did)-but in her soul she invokes the imagery and feeling of the old crone and for that, she deserves a shout out!
