It was a long drive home from her aunt in Pasadena.
Jane had a lot on her mind, mainly from the experience of visiting the area that she and her brother, Alejandro, loved as kids. When they were younger, going to Southern California meant staying at a relative's house in Hermosa Beach and going to either the beach, the mall, or Disneyland with childhood bliss. She can remember the warmth of the sun on the beach, or the magnificent aura of colors and vibes that the mall or theme park could provide. She can remember how fun and wonderful those days were.
But now, that whole vibe is now just a memory. The happy days riding in the car were now replaced with the grey and mundane of driving on the 405 heading towards the I5 northward. The loving homes within Hermosa are now replaced with large blocks, with one being owned by Alejandro that almost towers over the sea of homes. And the bliss of visiting Disneyland as a kid is now replaced by the stress of money and walking in the park like a parent, even though she and Rex have yet to have a kid or two. It's not surprising that she felt a pinch of sadness over what had been lost.
As for her trip to Pasadena, it was revealing. Her aunt, the (self-proclaimed) Little Old Lady from Pasadena, had a modest but spacious home in the most beautiful area of Southern California. Just a short drive from the neighborhoods full of homes designed by Greene and Greene, the house was quite something to those new to the city. As Jane and her aunt talked, the stories of the family living in Alhambra, CA came to light; how Jane's Great-Great-Great grandfather, Vladimir Anastasia, was the first member of the family to graduate from a university in America for Dentistry. And how they grew accustomed from living almost like Kings in Georgia while providing horses to the Czar of Russia, to becoming simple shop owners in a warmer part of the world. How they all felt when Vlad decided to head up into the Central Valley to set up his practice in this little city called Puttnamville. It must have been a new world for him, as the USA was to the rest of his family.
During that visit, it became clear that Jane still had roots in So Cal, but still felt like an outsider considering how her immediate family chose to live in the valley. And how that lifetime had affected both her and her relationship with her brother as they got older. Jane chose to stay in the Valley while Alejandro decided to become a Hollywood star. And in the end, he succeeded in not only that, but also as a model and real estate developer. He lived the American dream, but not the route Jane would have gone down. She was fine with being a small shop owner like immigrant ancestors and her dad, while also being a devoted wife to a rancher. The calm of ranch life was a greater treasure than the hustle and bustle of LA traffic.
So, as she drove home, Jane could only think of her nice warm bed. It'll be four hours before she gets there, so it's going to be a long night for her.
Started as a doodle showing Jane driving. Ended up writing a story full of Anastasia family lore. Please comment!!!!!Art©KCFoxStudios
