This is what lions do
They fight over territory. And they got the worst of it. Technically she wasn't a bad guy. She wanted what was best for her tribe. She needed an alpha male, not her kid in charge. Lions don't have their own males in charge otherwise incest. That was her mistake.

First her brother Nuka, then her Mom (who was willing to attack her when she said enough, not to mention in the original ending before they changed it Zira willingly let go and rejected Kiara's offer to her help (you can still see her smile in the movie as she falls into the river)
