受ける (u-ke-ru) literally means "to receive, accept, get, inherit, take (damage, a test), catch, parry, sustain (damage), or incur (a loss)"
受け (uke) is a colloquialism which means "the submissive partner of a homosexual relationship," or roughly translated, "catcher."
But the kanji on its own is never pronounced "Uke" (even in the word uke, kanji only accounts for the "u"
Actually on its own the kanji is pronounced "Ju" which means Vedanā, the Buddhist concept of "feeling" or "sensation," attachment to which ultimately causes suffering.
