This was a gift picture for
toboe for being a very good friend and an incredibly generous one at that too! He ordered some items from the Bioware store for me and shipped them half way around the globe. In returm I promised him to draw two pictures for him, to at least somewhat get even.
For this first picture, I remembered that Sangie very much enjoyed Deus Ex: Human Revolution and similar to the Mass Effect picture I drew for him some time back, I wanted to portray his character in a similar fashion.
My initial idea was him as the games protagonist Alex Jensen, either being in a combat situation or just as a dramatic portrait in the world of Deus Ex.
The trouble was, that I couldnt come up with a good enough pose, that felt right for this situation. All the ideas I tried looked too stiff and just plain boring. So I had to think of something else.
So over time I came up with the current concept. I originally wanted to make him look similar to the Vitruvian Man bei Da Vinci, but in the end I felt it would just be distracting if he had four arms and legs. When I was clear about the direction I wanted this picture to go, the real trouble began.
You see in the game, the main character has an augmented body, with mechanical limbs and organs in a very elaborate and detailed design. My goal was to recreate that design as close as possible. For that I started looking for concept art, reference picture, fan art and I even managed to find a Adam Jensen 3d model for garrysmod, which I used to take dozens of reference screenshots.
When I had all the material I needed to recreate these augmentations, I slowly started building them step by step. I started with the neck, the chest, the shoulder, the arm and the hands. The main character from the game actually has also augmented legs, but since they are never seen below his pants, I didnt want to try my own design on there, since it would have required a lot of work, without the guarantee that it would meet the standards of the design from the original game.
After the concepts and sketches were finished, the picture developed very quickly and before I knew it, I was already done with the whole thing. Originally I wanted to add some interface elements and text on the picture, but I scrapped that, because I like to keep things a bit ambigious and I think putting a definite text on pictures, ruins the room of interpretation for the viewer.
So yeah, I am very satisfied with how this picture turned out and I had lots of fun working on this. I hope Sangie will like it and I hope you do too.
Enjoy!

"~Broken body built anew
Spirit lingers, torn in two
Metal fingers grip my heart so cold~
~Slave to the new black gold, there's a heartbeat under my skin
Search my electric soul for the hidden man within~"
couldn't resist, it was a good song....and this looks quite good indeed as well.
