First of those games which spook you I recall playing was either Hexen or Heretic... Don't recall which, but one of those had "scare" spell that paralyzed the target for a few seconds. When used on you, it was done by a screaming skull suddenly popping up at you from nowhere, and it worked pretty well, at least, when you were focused on something else.
