I soooooooo love this song and yesterday i was trying to play it by ear and got nowhere, so i downloaded the sheets and startes practicing it, this is the result. I now can play the first part. I know it has a nasty mistake right in the middle but i love so much how the expression came out that i don't care. The recording is poor because of my computer :P.

I play it from memory, i suck at reading sheets, i must learn but... i'm lazy XD. Mostly i learn things by ear, big mistake. Anyways, it's been a long time since i sitted and learned something classic. Mostly i compose Progressive Metal O_o so, it's quite a change. I love classic music, i just didn't give myself the time to play it since i was all like "I must be faster... fasterrrrrrrr, play 109283901823712 notes in 1 second. Use the weirdest time signatures DX" and so, ñ.ñ;. So, now that i think i'm good enough i'm giving it a try =). Btw, i never studied piano myself =( (another big mistake), i was Synth Synth Synth all my life ñ.ñ;.
I usually committed pieces to memory, partly in order to avoid turning the page at awkward moments. Whenever I played I always looked at the keys, and if I made a mistake I'd go back to a sort of mental checkpoint from where I knew I could pick it up again; I can't just gloss over any major errors because it screws with my mental map of the music. Once I was playing a piece for my high school's end-of-year prizegiving, and I turned over to the last page and /completely/ forgot how to read music for a few seconds. I knew the piece perfectly, but right at that moment my mind dropped the ball. It took me six tries to finally get the chord I needed to continue. >.< I think that would have to be one of the most mortifying public moments in my life.
Personally, I don't like metal, with a few exceptions. I find it too grating and harsh on my ears. I don't begrudge anyone writing it, or listening to it, as long as I'm not within earshot. :p

I do exactly the same XD. I tend to part everything i play in little parts, so if i mistake something i can go on from that checkpoint, as you said.
I'm the kind of guy who tryes to hear every style, because i think it's kind of not respectful to say "This is a horrible style" without even listening to it not even once (don't get me wrong, i'm not saying you said that, i'm just telling you the way i am D=. I tell you 'cause people tend to get me wrong and go "OMGZ, I DIDN'T SAY THAT" ñ.ñ;). Anyways there are some bands that are labeled like "Metal" but actually have really sweet songs, wich are really great to hear and don't pierce your ears =O. For example a band called "Pain of Salvation" if you ever get to hear their live CD Called 12-5 you'll understand what i mean, or the album BE. Also with Ollllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllld work from Dream Theater happens the same (they got too "Hard-Metalish" latetly), say for example Space Dye Vest (Awake), Finally Free (Metropolis PT2, Scenes from a memory), or even Solitary Shell <3 (Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, CD2). (Pro-Metal geek here XD)

I'm not familiar enough with other musical genres to categorise what I hear. 'Metal' is quite a broad definition, and may include a lot of sub-genres. I like Nightwish, though some of the more raucous songs are a bit painful to listen to. The only other metal/rock I can think of that I actually tolerate/like/can recall the name of is Lordi, particularly 'Hard Rock Hallelujah'.
