Learn it
Ignoring someone's [be they your friend, family, child, pet, partner] needs [when they are genuinely there for you and your needs], until they stop asking, that is NOT independence, nor teaching them independence, that is neglect. What that teaches is they do not matter, Their voice is irrelevant, Those needs are a burden, and their existence is a bother only to be taken for granted.
If and when you genuinely care about someone, you meet them with honesty, respect, and consistency, with patience.
Sometimes it can look like a friend or family is there to meet you, and at those times it's important to take many moments to verify. If they're switching up, changing what they need or want, then they aren't actually consistently there for you, they are there for themselves, which is called using you. Using you, being used, is not them consistently caring about you.
Seems too many are oblivious to this lesson. Learn it, and be consistent. Abandon those who refuse to learn it or refuse to take notice. One day, they will regret it and genuinely learn the lesson and *then* be consistent
