um... man you can't Secularize a religion. but you can work with the moderates and progressives within one, and strengthen them. So you get understanding instead of crazypantszelotmurdernuts, which attempting to purge a people or culture actually creates more of.

I'm a religious sort of guy studied in history, theology, psychology, and sociology.

Assholes like this make a mockery of the very beliefs they claim to uphold. but you don't need me to tell ya that. Zelots are a problem in all faiths, beliefs and creeds. and they are ALL ASSHOLES WHO BREAK EVERYTHING THEY TOUCH. >,< you should see some Buddhist, Pagan, and atheist zelots those guys are a total mindfuck.

I also think it has to do a lot with culture. During the islamic golden age most of the old sultanates were a pretty tolerant, scientific, and socially progressive places. (usually the farther ya got from arabia and the closer towards egypt and persia) especally compared to europe at the time.

Makes it all the sadder that these nutbags are what islam has become famious for... not creating algebra (to help simplify the complex islamic property traditions) or the music, the dance, the freaking invention of modern coffee

Personally I'm a christian, and I came to my own personal faith after much soul searching and research on religions, ideals, and cultures across the world. I liked the message of redemption, helping others even at great personal sacrifice, and the idea that god loves all mankind, therefore we should all love each other, and ya'know, not be dicks.

I'd say christian and jewish traditions had their nutty zelot experiences and have culturally calmed down a great deal in their current 21st century forms. Jewish folks figured it out first, Christians second, and now I guess it's islam's turn to see just how destructive dumbfuck zelots can be.

That doesn't mean the zelots have gone away, just means that the larger body of believers know exactly where these dumbfuck barbarian nutters will lead. Which is why you don't see christians rioting in deep south when the US government does something that their various southern denominations think is wrong. (IE: no gay marrage riots)
(PS: there's like 12 major denominations and a ton of little ones with many different beliefs ever since protestants broke from the catholic church. ranging from totally progressive to far right fundies)
