Disaster strikes again.
So the heavy rain storm today caused more water to leak in the wall in the spare room, soaking the drywall in the same places. I should have been working on fixing this problem and not wasting time to get ready to go to a convention.
Putting off these repairs is going to cause more problems, like possible mold growing in the wall if i don't get this fixed.
EDIT UPDATE:
- so i'm discovering the drywall is wet & severely damaged, and with some mold beginning to grow on the inside. This is going to be a very expensive repair as it may require excavation of the entire yard on the side of the house to repair the foundation wall if its cracked, then complete tearing out of the walls and new floor i just installed in the rooms. This will cost more than i can afford, and do not know if insurance will cover it.
As it is VERY unlikely that Anthrocon will refund my registration and i already paid for travel insurance, etc. should i just go and deal with this when i get home, or deal with it now as it needs to be done asap. If the insurance do not cover this i will have to sell the house. If i have to sell i will move back to Newfoundland as i will have no other choice because of the ridiculous real estate rates and costs here in Ontario.
- There are photos of the damage on my Twitter accounts, but you have to be following them to see the photos.

- UPDATE: 7:30 PM)
[u]- As i have to wait for the damage to dry out with dehumidifiers before i can do anything, i will still attend AC ( as i already paid for stuff like pre-reg, travel Ins, etc. and woudl not get any refunds for cancelling. Though I may be a bit lacking in any excitement there as this mess will be on my mind knowing i have to face it when i get back. Also after reading through my Homeowners Insurance policy, it looks like this kind of thing is not covered, meaning this will severely put me in financial trouble or even could bankrupt me in repair costs, ( or last-ditch thing have to sell the house..

The struggle is real.
This page may help you out. Best of luck!

crap crap crap.
You needed a little vacation.
AC has been creeping up on us all pretty fast, I know we're unprepared for it as well because we're in the process of packing up our entire apartment to move to a new house 3 days after AC. Try to relax and do what you've got to do, home life is most important and friends will understand that. I hope you can get your pre-reg forwarded to the following year.
i wish i was there to help. I feel very bad that you're severely stressed out and I can only imagine how much the house must cost up there.
This is heavy...
you do sound like you need a vacation but I agree that your house is more important than some con. however I would also look into the house insurance and see if you can be covered and everything can get fixed and situated first. I would honestly do that before anything else and look into your options at hand.
don't even worry about Anthrocon. that's what I would do if it were my house.
I would look around and see what can be done and whether or not the problem can easily be taken care of. just to give you that peace of mind if its gonna be a large problem or not. Then I suggest to get a quote of how much it's going to be exactly. and then stabilize yourself with your budget and finances...
I feel bad because all I can do is offer advice but if you were local then I would be over there helping you right now
My luck hasent gotten any good recently either, yesterday the exhaust broke on my integra that Aura drives and thats going to run us $600+ for a new cat and exhaust pipeing. Its already been welded and patched as many times as it can :/
I hope you can get that wall fixed for good without it costing a fortune.
Seriously it'll literally poison you as you sleep.
Hope all works out though.
The testing to be sure is expensive, so most people decide to treat all occurrences of mold as if they are the worst possible organism. That's fine, of course, as it is better to be safe than sorry, as they say.
There are several things that you can do to help remedy the situation between now and the con. I hope that you can make it.
Would it be possible to treat the location with some sort of disinfectant before you left? Peracetic acid is a great one, as it is a better oxidizer than (sodium?) hypochlorate which is in bleach.
There are products that will produce peracetic acid enzymatically and therefore limit the hazards of working with that material directly.
I believe that the same company makes the peracetic acid product that I have seen. I am looking for that now. I know that it was purchased in Colorado a few weeks ago.
"Concrobium Mold Stain Remover"
Is the name that I am seeing. I didn't see the results in person yet, but I have heard from a local user that it worked well for mold growing on wooden beams and dry wall in a space that was inclosed and a concrete floor poured. The wood had signs of mold before hand, but it grew and spread in the higher humidity when the area was covered in tarps after the concrete was poured. It was a covered patio that was being re-made and then turned into an addition for the house.
That's a lot of work left to do, but as long as things are dry it will be fine for a little while, no?
I hope that your insurance comes through for you on the repair work... Are you going to do that yourself?
