I personally don't like YCHS, but I know that one of my friends almost exclusively commissions via YCH! He's really shy about commissioning, so it's easier for him when he doesn't have to explain an idea. I think a good mix is the way to go if you're looking to try YCHs out.

As for adopts, I feel that folks who watch you would lean towards the monster route, but that's just based on your style c:

Mostly I prefer standalone commissions, and hardly ever get ych. Though sometimes artists will offer a new style and I'll get a picture done in that style.

As for adoptables, I worry that using the dual- adoptable approach might be detrimental to the overall selling process. I think a lot of people who want adoptables want them to be unique, and showing two similar, but different colors might detract from that feeling. Sure I've seen people get away with 5-6 color alts and have them all sell, but they're usually already very popular, and most often selling sexy characters. Of course maybe I'm wrong, but that's just how I feel.

I think about your art and what are the strengths and weaknesses for your general style. While you're capable of branching out and doing cute things, most of what you do is macabre, pseudo-horror, or generally dark emotional themes in non-traditional color palettes, with heavy use of natural framing elements and symmetry too. There is a niche for these of course, and while I like emotional pieces, sometimes it can feel a bit grotesque for my liking. I think about things like darker tarot card art when I think of your style.

I don't really know what to tell you though, as far as getting more business. :/ Perhaps just more regularity, really.

Yeah I wouldn't close the other type of commission but I was wondering if investing my time in planning YCH templates could be a good move. Doesn't hurt to try I guess hehe

Hnnn...that's a really interest point about the adopts.
I have been following what I see around, and that is that people usually use templates and bases and make TONS of adopts with then with just a few changes. Of course I thought I couldn't get away with too much repetition since I'm not popular as you said, but I believed that only 2 variations per adopt would be ok???
Not sure, maybe I should try some one shot adopts too. See how that flies.

But I get what are you saying, and I struggle with that you know?
I sometimes think that I should do more 'generally liked' themes and lighter pictures
But I've seen dark themes artists thrive too so you know.....it can be done lol

The advice to post with more regularity is surely appreciated.
I'm always reminding myself to do that because that's an advice I have read time and time again.
Not direct to me, but when people talk about growing and audience in any social platform they always mention that.
So maybe it really is what it all boils down too lol

Ych's are good if i see something that fits my character(s) but i usually commission based on my ideas. Ych's are a good way to develop a fan base though.

I prefer anthros, creepy and sexy. Cute is good but less liked.

There are maybe six poses that I like to buy over and over again with minor variations and they are just about never offered as "your character here" setups. If somebody insists on "wing[ing] it" or otherwise not accepting pose input I do not mess with the situation since I know I will be bothered! I have the impression that I am a mercifully atypical customer, however.
likewise I have never felt compelled to "adopt" a character. If I want to draw someone else's I just do so, preferring my own characters for any matter of greater significance.

It does seen like you're an atypical commissioner, but regardless I welcome your input =]
I'm not against pose suggestions at all, as long is not a inverted jump while in 3 point perspective it can be pretty reassuring to have a reference provided by the client hehe

I think that people who have a higher level of artistic capabilities see adopts in a different light.
As you said, if you want a character who looks a certain way....you just draw then!
But I believe they can be pretty fun for people who don't have that skill.
Or maybe if you really like somebody else's style and they make something really out there, I have seen that too.

Personally, I like to give an artist freedom. I like to see what they think about my character and how they envision the character's actions. So artistic freedom is something I enjoy in an artist. Though, if I see a YCH that fits my character, I will ponder getting it.

As for adopts, I love creepy/monstrous. Sexiness can be included. ;3

You do have a pretty cool looking character, I bet artists enjoy the free reign you give them =D
The commissioners I had until now where pretty cool with artistic freedom and I'm always thankful for that!
Still, I have seen YCH pictures EVERYWHERE so you know.... I have decided to give it a try.

Commissions I usually wait until I happen to see an artist open (with slots still free) and hope I have an idea which suits their art style. Because of working a full time job, I don't often get a chance to snag slots so this usually doesn't happen often.

YCH's are nice as I can see the piece in advance and often see ideas I don't think of. They also often mean a better chance at getting art and perhaps getting a piece for a character I don't have many references of yet.

Adoptables aren't really my thing. I come up with most of my own designs, plus adoptables are frequently complicated designs while I tend to prefer simpler ones.

That's a good thing to be reminded off!
I always forget to advertise when my comms are open, I mean, it's in my profile but that's not a place people look often. So it's good to make a "reminder" post sometimes.

Dude, I have a pretty big inner battle with adopt designs!
I want to make something that I would like too, and I prefer simpler designs
But at the same time what I see mostly in the "field" are complex and ornate characters
So what to do???
I usually end up on the simpler side though,
to tell the truth I don't have much patience to paint a thousand markings and frills on a character lol
