When I was nine my parents would put me in time out for up to an hour at a time. It was called the chair, and the chair was left in the kitchen. You weren't allowed to leave the chair or make any noise. A year before that I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. I was told I could lose my feet and legs very often. I didn't even care about feet and legs that much. Anyway, these were some of the first steps in my loss of freedom.
