A Coyote fursuit mascot dedicated to model rocketry and similar stuff. An anthropomorphic coyote who enjoys the outdoors when not working in a laboratory. A single-hearted soul who can team up with others when needed, but prefers the way of rugged individualism. Depicted in the webcomic Cross Time Cafe as a nephew of Wile E. Coyote and as part-time chef. He can fabricate rockets from office/art supplies, scrounge up military and industrial surplus for his needs/collection, a seasoned marksman and a good fisherman. This howler can dispatch pest animals for local farmers whose crops are being savaged, using rack-grade military rifles to do the deed. Calling upon his coyote survival skills, Rocket can coax varmints right out of their burrows. He can live off the land if necessary.
He has distinguished himself as a fursuiter, earning national recognition from a public service organization--four consecutive times. When his rockets go awry, it's attributed to coyote luck. Though he likes the ladies, Rocket believes that his lifestyle is too austere--or too dangerous--to be adequately shared with another.
The oldest of a litter of five boys and a girl. His youngest brother died at the age on one month. His sister is the youngest of the group. One brother is larger than he, two are smaller, and one is about the same size.
Inspired by a number of close encounters with RL coyotes over the years, sometimes two at once. There was the Big Daddy coyote running on the ice of a frozen pond in February--it was more like he was gliding across the ice. Only a few hundred yards from my home. Mouth open, tongue hanging out, scruffy coat of different earth-tone hues, and on a collision course with me. Fortunately I stopped as that big howler passed and leaped into the ditch on the other side.
There was a visit with one near the AuSable River, North of Grayling, MI. It may have watched me catch and release Creek Chubs for a half-hour. The little wolf met me at my vehicle expecting to mooch some trout on Free Fishing Weekend. Disappointment. You don't forget a stare like that. Those glowing yellow eyes!
Another yote flushed a groundhog cub one Sunday morning at the intersection of two dirt roads as RTC was hunting nearby. The cub ran so fast that a small cloud of dust was kicked up. The yote simply strode alongside in a nonchalant manner. Then the wind shifted. He caught Rocket's scent and they were staring at each other across 50 yards of open ditch.
One Friday afternoon, driving across I-75 on an overpass enroute to home, something tan, grey, and canid squirted from under the guardrail and trotted across the road before me. As a courtesy--flashed the headlights and the howler picked up the pace.
Coyotes and rocketry seems to be a good combination. The fursuit was created from a mascot designed for a CAP model rocketry course taught to cadets who enroll in the program. His likeness appears in the course materials. The fursuit mascot is also a means of promoting the program beyond 'normal' public affairs during Summer Encampment.
A Folkmanis Coyote puppet purchased at FCN a few years ago, helped to further legitimize RT Coyote's mission. The card included with the pawpet revealed the Shoshone folktale of a coyote wizard who talked to stars and travelled into space. Hence the quote in this profile.
Two other partial fursuit characters have been added to the act since we began performing. Tadeusz ("Tahd-zhew") Polski Fox is a toony red fox of Polish heritage. He made his first official appearance at FCN 2012 and proved to be a good fit as an intelligence agent bearing a striking resemblance to that depicted in the con banner in the hotel lobby. Tadeusz was our first commissioned fursuit, and from Silverluna Creations. Fox are known in both the Old World, and the New. So we intend to utilize him in the local Renaissance Faire, perhaps as Reynard of the medieval folk tale from the Duchy of Luxembourg.
We added a German Shepherd partial to the lineup as a means to show off our massive collection of East German military and paramilitary uniforms. We love the breed and have worked professionally with them. Having a toony Alsatian wearing a serious-looking traditional German uniform is a sure attention-getter. We plan to upgrade "Wolfgang" with a better "deluxe" tail and additional uniform options. Should the next FCN con theme include a Hogan's Heroes tribute--you can guess who will be first in line.

Ten Years A Coyote (G)
This howler approaches the decade milestone of his existence in fursuit. The milestone will be observed as it began--one week from this Sunday in the Tuscola County Pumpkin Festival Parade held in Caro, Michigan. It has been a very enjoyable and rewarding experience. Fursuiting has opened up new opportunities and friendships. Rocket has many friends around the world now, thanks to the furry culture and the internet
When one puts on a fursuit and steps out into the harsh reality the world presents, you have an awesome reponsibility, not only to yourself and your well-being, but also to furry fans everywhere. Some see you as a giant living plush toy or cartoon character. Others will see you as something to be avoided, or worse. You do your best anyway and make your presentation.
It's good therapy to be able to brighten someone's day at public events, like parades, and show off your character. It can also be a challange to stay healthy while doing public appearances. I recommend involvement in public service organizations. Fursuit mascot appearances draw attention and can help local chapters gain attention and assist with fundraising. Plus the local chapter can provide support for you as you put on your show. (I usually get a spotter to watch out for me and to carry a cold drink with straw during the parade or festival stint. Afterwards, I get treated to dinner.)
This howler has helped gain press and television air time for his cause each time he appears and is often invited to return. Donations have been known to increase when he's on duty. At camp, the staff look forward to seeing him, and the younger attendees tend not to be as homesick when Rocket joins them at Revielle each morning. Newcomers think he's crazy at first, until they learn he's held in high regard--all the way up to the national level.
