The newest member of Team Sol, a band of Edenites working for the Joint Staff. These eight members serve individual branches of the service, working among their fellow soldiers on the field of duty to protect the Ten Empire from PHALANX and their armies of machines and psionic soldiers. When their CO calls on them, however, they go on "special assignments" and the Team comes together to go on suicide missions and vigilantism. Counterterrorists, Vigilantes, Special Ops and ESP specialists, Team Sol is the last line of defense to counter the growing threat of psionic beings everywhere!
Carmelita Ortega lived on the outskirts of Madrid in Neo-Spain, leading a pampered life under her widower Father. As a child, her mother had died of a car accident, and her dad could never find herself to marry another woman, but he did continue to see his priest for confessions. He made sure that Carmelita never had to want for anything her entire life, yet it wasn't enough for Carmelita. The car accident had snapped something inside of her, the reality of her mother's death sinking in her mind, resulting in her taking on a perception of being only half-alive. When she got old enough to drive, she became a natural daredevil, con-artist, gambler, fencer and thief. Even the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona provided her moments of excitement. But the thrills never seemed to help her escape from this living death of hers. Her father insisted to bring Jesus into her life, as it was only through Him that she'd survived without a scratch for so long. She would smile and nod to have him leave her alone.
In time, her father passed away from lung cancer, and she was to inherit her father's estate. If she'd done this she would've been set for life. To her esteemed aristocrat's surprise, she sold the estate to someone else and travelled the world to seek greater thrills. To her, a life of luxury and stagnancy was no good to her. So she would pursue the lands, the sea and the sky restlessly until she found something
It was on a scuba diving expedition in the non polluted areas of the Mediterranean where her crimes caught up to her. A mob boss from Sicily had made bets with her and eventually found out she cheated. She'd been hunted for ever since, and they had up to her at last. They stripped her of all of her clothes, knocked her unconscious and then threw her overboard in a weighted potato sack overboard. Ironically, grecian scientists from Project Resurrection were looking for her, too. And a team was immediately sent to recover her. When she woke up, she saw herself transformed into the bird woman you see now.
Carmelita was one of the few who accepted the idea of being a mutant quickly; in fact, she even welcomed the thought of being used as a sacrifice. To her, death was merely a challenge, and it seemed like he finally won. As the deadline for the Glyph of Naturalization came closer, though, the more uneasy she became. At first she thought she was just eager to die, but no. The months of captivity made her realize just how much she didn't want to die. She wanted to grow old and have a family. For the first time in years, she prayed to God from her heart. And then the rebellion was started.
Following being unfrozen a thousand years later, Carmen Ortega has no memory of who she is. Strangely enough, her own name was erased off the data files. As a result, while she was rehabed into becoming an effective member of society she was given the name Sel Mahv'rik, Sel is Ikish for "Icy" and Mahv'rik is a mixture of English and Druidic, meaning "Risktaker." She liked the sound of it, adopting it very quickly.
She started a career as a janitor at the Yellow Dart in Neo-Twin Pillars, but soon made aspirations to go to college. But then, a real estate agent, having ties to a crime syndicate, came to get the mortgage on her condo, and if he could have it, he would make her disappear. It was here that her powers resurfeced, freezing everything in the room, including the real estate agent. Horrified by her own work, she fled into the wastelands outside the city, where scavengers and criminals were known to hang around. It was here that Mokvar, Shiv, and Shelzan of the IPSS had caught up to her. The crime syndicate dropped charges(Obviously from bribes within the Police department), and she was free as a bird; that is, until Sel was given an offer by General Kings as the eighth member of Team Sol. Labrat had recently been retired from the team, and thus a new position was open. Sel had gladly taken the position and has been working under IPSS alongside Dasmascus since.
Caremelita still retains much of her reckless, free-spirited nature. She prefers working alone, having issues with being controlled too much. Impatient, competitive, and adamant, she is the boldest of Team Sol, willingly diving into danger at all odds. She recklessly challenges death on missions, though she will not always think plans through. She finds Omniphobe a tad annoying, but as one who is willing to take up crazy challenges, she easily puts up with his whining. She does not like Sierra, The Roaster or Timothy, who all see her as even more immature than Jonas. As a result, she takes it out on the one she's constantly compared to. Dimitri, having dealt with much of the daredevil behavior on the job, acts as a fatherly figure, her aesthetic that keeps her from doing things way too crazy.
Sel's power is a mitochondric type of cryokinesis. Though contact with her skin, she can create endothermic reactions with any form of matter. Water, Methane, lava, people, liquid metal...all of these can be frozen by her almost instaneously. While frozen, they are rather brittle and at risk of being broken, assuming the freezsing process did damage any tissue or material in the process. By waving her claws in the air, she can even generate weapons of piercing cold, or augment her fist with the bludgeoning power of ice. The rapier is her weapon of choice, and often she'll generate ice rapiers that are super sharp. This power to generate weapons, however, is limited to environments with atmospheres.
The only catch to her power, however, is that the heat is channelled into her, raising her body heat to very high temperatures. Before Team Sol, she fell into severe heat stroke from freezing that room, barely surviving by rehydrating herself and removing her clothes. Now, they've performed an operation on her, giving her a series of bionic vents that allow the heat to escape from her body even as she uses her ice powers. She is still limited to how much she can freeze things, but she is much more useful now than before.
Her uniform is the most specialized of the team members. She must wear a bracer around her back to keep her wings from getting in the way, at the cost of her avian agility. Also, it makes her less of a target. A special add on is strapped to her back to make her ventilation shafts vacuumed seal, giving her free use of her ice powers in extreme environments. Her gloves are super thin, but damage resistant and insulated, allowing her to make use of her freezing powers freely. Her suits shoes are shaped much like bird feet, fitted exactly for her, with a special sole that works exactly like a certain shoe that simulates being barefoot.
...Whew! She has quite the backstory.
