I've never been an Anime aficionado, but I do tend to pick out a few that look interesting from time to time and give them a chance based on my tastes. My first ever Anime Convention was back in Texas in 2004. This was back when they DIDN'T charge you $55 just to get in the front door and then have you come face to face with a bunch of rubbermaid tables full of $45 plastic keychains and $25 Pokey-Mon stickers like they all do today.
No, I actually was given the old "swag grab bag" when I went to this Convention. It had free promotional materials inside like flyers, postcards, stickers, badges and even a few comics with a dozen or so pages in them. I still have it all, actually. It also came with a DVD that at first I thought was a CD, but it was actually a catalogue for ADV Films Company that was full of promotional video trailers for different Anime for sale. I decided to pop it in one day just to see what was on it. It had a lot of promos for late 80's and early 90's Anime that were kind of interesting. But the one that really caught my attention was the trailer for one called "Devil Hunter Yohko."
The catchy music first caught my ear, and then the sight of a cute Anime school girl suddenly transforming into a traditional-looking Japanese Warrior, wielding a big ass sword and cutting up what looked like a vampire seemed really interesting. Yes, the full-on nipples and exploding clothes were great too, but the gritty, late 80's style animation reminded me a little of "Vampire Hunter D" and "Battle Angel", so I thought that I would try to find this movie.
Needless to say, this was back before Netflux and Cruchroll were around, and with Yoo-Toob still in it's early days, it was hard to find something to watch without buying it at a used video store and hoping that the VHS wasn't rotted or that the DVD wasn't scratched to Hell after buying it. Kid-Napster was around at the time, so I at least wanted that super catchy theme song, but I couldn't find that anywhere either.
Last week, for the first time in over 10 years, I popped in that old promo DVD that I got from that Texas Convention all those years ago just to have some background noise. The Devil Hunter Yohko trailer came up again and reminded me of how I never found it. So....I immediately went on the internet and found it!
After finally seeing this series for the first time ever after all these years, I must say that I love it. It has just the right amount of swords and demons, not an overload of cutesy humor, decent main character development and even a fair amount of nudity. The full series is apparently a movie with five episodes afterwards. And I was even able to finally acquire that catchy song from the trailer that I always wanted, too. Sometimes the advances in the internet can be helpful.
So, naturally, I had to make my own Yohko Mano in Kisekae, too.
I highly recommend tracking down this series if you have an afternoon to spare. And I usually don't recommend much Anime.
