When he joined the Marshals, Ethan Hawkins quickly became known as a bit of a tough guy, even compared to the other marshals. He rose to his present position of Chief Marshal on merit. And now he's stuck behind a desk, he really enjoys reading the reports of his favorite wild cards, Reacher and Lester. He can see himself in their adventures.

I feel like he shouldn't need to feel so much stress because he happens to be a predator. Honestly, I kinda hate how many stories like this exist in the fandom about how predators would get the worse end of things if all animals were sentient.
I remember another story where supposedly the prey animals cast some kind of spell that made predators unable to eat meat anymore, despite their bodies being unable to handle anything else, dooming them all to slow starvation. There wasn't any sympathy for them either; they got treated like their natural physical requirements meant they were all evil murderers, rather than just doing what nature intended them to do: balancing out the prey populations. The worst part for me was the thought that without any kind of predators, all the various species of prey would eventually overwhelm the ecosystem and starve to death themselves.
Don't think so, because they're 'too smart'? Look at how humans are doing this world right now. And that's just one species that for the most part will produce one to three offspring. Most prey animals birth litters. Imagine the choices that would become necessary to contain a huge number of species from overpopulating.
But yeah. Predators are actually necessary, in nature. I can't really think of how the prey types would balance things out without them in a fully sentient world.
