Chag sukkos, all, since I'm posting this so late.
So, since I was alone at home doing the prayers, the machzor I was using instructed us to whack our heart on the word "committed," like a sin, which
seadog_driftwood (to my left) has never done, just the tradition he was raised in, because no one does anything the same. It wasn't hard, just... the cumulative effect was worthy of a mild groan. As a convert, this comes up a lot. You do things by the book. But not that book. We use this other one.
I wouldn't be great to have in a synagogue, honestly. Due to my fibro I had to drink water and do the last half sitting down, I was getting faint. Guilty as charged. I mean, that's the point, innit.

What I'd been told is that you're not supposed to actually hit yourself so much as tap yourself to indicate that yep, you did that. Sort of the Buddhist "drive all faults into oneself" lojong saying. I'm sure you'd be great in synagogue; there's always been recognition that some people may be doing this while incredibly sick, enough that there's a blessing for eating on Yom Kippur.
