You could also just do whatever you know makes them happy. Any movies, food, etc.
For me, food I love but don’t get to eat very often is a good gift. With drinks, I honestly just love chocolate milk. Watching a good movie naked at home with good food & drinks. With kinky sex afterwards.
Also, I’d love it if they asked me to teach them something I’m good at. Which is something that can continue even after Valentines Day.
Don’t really know what your friend likes, but I think if you want it to be special it should be something unique to them.
Also, museums. Everyone I’ve ever talked to has told me that it’s a bad Valentines gift, but I fucking love museums. Specifically natural history, archaeology, and science museums.
I mean, depends on what sort of person they are and how you want them to see you. Gifts are always a bit of a pain in the ass but from experience more thoughtful and personalised gifts go down better than being handed something that cost a lot and is just another ornament you'll maybe look at a few times then forget it's there.
Wouldn't really suggest art or even games personally as it's meaningful in the moment but once they're done appreciating or playing with it then they'll probably not think back to it too much.
A single item that they'll find use out of then some sweets/a dinner they like is quite a nice and memorable combo. When in doubt though plushies/teddies tend to be a good option. For several years now I've been snagging build a bear teddies that the others like. Got a stitch plushie this year and last year I believe I grabbed the newest toothless and nubless plushes. Whichever characters the individual likes really assuming they enjoy teddies. Plus biggest benefit is they can be thrown about and not end up smashing to pieces. ^_^
It's a hard one though, everyones different when it comes to gifts and some people really do just appreciate sheer convenience while others love big things that they'll probably never use and will just sit in a corner of the room for months. XD
If you can't really think of a good gift though just gift them all your time and attention for the day. Sit about and do a movie marathon together or something of that nature. Whatever works out really, showing you care and want to spend time with them is the best gift really. ^_^
Museum is a good call. After walking around and all that a coffee shop for a drink of their choice and cake would be a good end to that part of the gift.
Upon this day so filled with heart
it tears at me that we're apart
my love for you blooms ever clear
no matter the weather or distance here
Know that my heart has only one role
to unite with you; the other half of my soul.
My idea for romantic evening would be to go someplace quiet and free of other people around and have a nice big meal under the stars, and then just lay down, maybe some cuddling, and just the two of your all alone gazing and looking up at the stars with no one else other then you two around.

I think a cute homecooked meal and a hearty fuck is right up your alley <3
